WATSONVILLE — A 58-year-old Watsonville man was pronounced dead at the scene of a solo-vehicle crash near Corralitos around midday Sunday, according to a release from the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to reports of a crash south of Las Colinas Drive on Eureka Canyon Road at about 12:10 p.m. during a break in the rain of what was otherwise a stormy weekend. According to the release, the man was driving a black 2003 GMC Yukon southbound at an undetermined speed when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle veered off the roadway and slammed into a dirt embankment west of Eureka Canyon Road.

After crashing into the embankment, the GMC traveled in a westerly direction and came to rest in a nearby creek. First responders performed lifesaving efforts upon arrival, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene due to major injuries sustained as a result of the crash.

According to the release, the cause of the crash is still under investigation and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor. A representative from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff Coroner’s Office was not immediately able to respond to a request to identify the victim of Sunday’s crash.
