Fire crews found one person dead inside the home.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A home on Handly Way in Sacramento is boarded up after a deadly fire Tuesday night.

The fire started around 7:30 p.m. The Sacramento Fire Department said one man was found dead inside the home, and two others got out on their own.

Next door neighbor Cynthia Rodriguez and her family were home at the time.

“It’s just sad to know that somebody next door just passed away,” she said.

She remembers hearing some commotion when the fire happened.

“All of a sudden, we just heard people screaming and things breaking, and we thought someone was getting into an argument but then I started smelling smoke,” Rodriguez said. “When I looked outside the window, the house was just all red; it was catching on fire. My husband called 911.”

On Wednesday morning, Sacramento Police Department arrested one suspect after considering the fire suspicious. 28-year-old James Joseph faces arson and homicide charges. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.

The victim’s identity has not been released yet and the investigation is ongoing.
