SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Multiple lanes of North Harbor Drive towards the San Diego International Airport were closed off Wednesday afternoon due to a sinkhole that opened on the roadway, according to Port of San Diego Harbor Police.

Authorities were alerted to the possible sinkhole along the road’s westbound lanes just after noon, Harbor PD said. All lanes except one were closed while city crews worked to close the hole.

A SigAlert was issued shortly after for the area due to traffic delays amid the road closures. By 1:30 p.m., a FOX 5 crew at the scene observed traffic backed up about half a mile on the Interstate 5 with the closure.

As of 2:20 p.m., all lanes have been reopened to traffic after a temporary fix was completed. According to Harbor PD, city crews will return to the area around 9 p.m. to reassess whether further repairs are needed.

Harbor PD is encouraging drivers heading to the airport around that time to use an alternative route to the area.

No additional information was immediately available.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
