A mountain lion was spotted at Contra Loma Boulevard and Longview Drive in Antioch, the city’s animal services department said Wednesday.

Antioch Animal Services said the big cat is familiar to them. He has been living in the area for several years and has been sighted multiple times in that span. The image below shows the mountain lion in a previous sighting.

While seeing a mountain lion can be scary, animal services say the risk of an attack is “infinitely small.”

“You are more likely to drown in your bathtub, be killed by a pet dog, or hit by lightning. If lions had any natural urge to hunt people, there would be attacks every single day. Instead, they avoid us,” Antioch Animal Services said.

Still, Antioch residents or people who visit are advised to be alert and avoid walking alone at dusk or dawn — this is when mountain lions are most active. If you do encounter a mountain lion, Animal Services advises not to run, instead stand tall, make eye contact and throw stuff at the animal if necessary.
