A 43-year-old man died after shots were fired in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego on Sunday afternoon, according to San Diego police.

Police received a report of gunfire at Market Street and 16th Street at 3:05 p.m., according to San Diego Police Department Officer John Buttle. At the same time, a witness flagged down a police officer in the area.

Upon arrival, officers found the man down on the sidewalk in front of an apartment building, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers began giving the man first aid until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man has been identified but his name will not be released to the public until his family has been notified, police say.

The shooter is still outstanding, police said. Officers describe him only as a man in dark clothing driving a silver or grey sedan.

Police closed 16th Street between Market and G Streets for several hours Sunday evening for the investigation.

An East Village shooting has left one person hospitalized, police say.

San Diego Police Homicide Detectives have taken over the investigation.

Officers said it appears the victim was walking with a group on the sidewalk of 600 16th Street when the incident started.

The suspect approached that group and shot the victim multiple times, according to SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell.

At this point in the investigation, police said it does look like the suspect intentionally targeted the victim — and not those around him.

The suspect then ran off to a nearby vehicle and drove away northbound, then eastbound toward State Route 94.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

Editor’s note: A previous headline to this story indicated the shooting was a drive-by. San Diego police were referring to another shooting in the Gaslamp Quarter at 12th and Imperial. No one was struck.
