THAT BREAKING NEWS. A MAN SHOT AND KILLED BY POLICE IN STANISLAUS COUNTY, CERES. POLICE SAY ONE OF THEIR OWN OFFICERS WAS ALSO HURT IN THIS INCIDENT. THAT PERSON IS EXPECTED TO BE OKAY. THIS WAS DURING HOUR 4:00 NEWSCAST OFFICERS AND DEPUTIES HAVE BEEN ON THE SCENE THERE PROCESSING THIS FOR HOURS, AND THE CALL ORIGINALLY CAME IN AROUND 1140 THIS MORNING IN A SERIES NEIGHBORHOOD. THANKS FOR BEING WITH US AT FIVE. I’M GULSTAN DART, I’M LISA GONZALEZ. THIS IS ALL HAPPENING ON DIRK COURT NEAR EL CAMINO AVENUE AND NINTH STREET. KCRA THREE’S MARICELA DE LA CRUZ IS AT THE SCENE, SO, MARICELA, WHAT LED UP TO THIS? DO WE KNOW YET? YEAH, WE KNOW THAT JUST BEFORE 12:00 TODAY, CERES POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THIS AREA. 34, UH, 100 DIRK COURT. THEY RESPONDED TO THIS AREA AFTER SOME PEOPLE CALLED IN REPORTS OF A MAN WHO WAS BRANDISHING A KNIFE TOWARDS SOME OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. AS THE CERES POLICE DEPARTMENT FOUND OUT THAT THIS INDIVIDUAL HAD AN ARREST WARRANT FROM THE NEIGHBORING CITY OF MODESTO FOR MULTIPLE CHARGES, INCLUDING ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. ONCE THE POLICE OFFICERS ARRIVED TO THIS AREA, WE KNOW THAT OFFICERS THAT THE SUSPECT RAN. HE WAS FOUND AT A COMMERCIAL PROPERTY ON SIXTH STREET. HE WAS HIDING IN A VEHICLE AND THEY WERE ABLE TO FIND HIM WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A K-9 UNIT. ONCE OFFICERS ATTEMPTED TO TAKE THIS MAN INTO CUSTODY, THAT IS WHEN THE OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING UNFOLDED. WE KNOW THAT THE SUSPECT WAS KILLED AND JUST SOUTH OF THE AREA WHERE WE ARE STANDING RIGHT NOW. THAT IS WHERE A WHITE VEHICLE WE WERE ABLE TO SEE THAT HAD SOME BULLET HOLES. NOW WE KNOW THAT ONE CERES POLICE OFFICER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AFTER THE INDIVIDUAL TRIED TO STAB THEM, AND WE SINCE THE AREA HAS BEEN PRETTY ACTIVE, WE DID HEAR FROM ONE RESIDENT WHO LIVES OUT HERE. HE’S BEEN OUT HERE FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS AND WE HEARD FROM HIM WHAT HE SAW AND HOW THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS FEELING. IT’S PRETTY SAD THAT SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENED WITH ALL THE KIDS THAT’S IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. UH, IT, YOU KNOW, I MEAN, THEY GOT TO SEE IT, AND THEN THEY GOT TO LIVE WITH IT. NOW WE KNOW THAT NO OTHER OFFICERS WERE INJURED. HOWEVER, WE DON’T KNOW HOW MANY OFFICERS INITIALLY RESPONDED TO THIS CALL. AND HERE ON SCENE, THE STANISLAUS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE HAS ALSO BEEN OUT HERE BECAUSE THERE IS A CRIMINAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE INVESTIGATION THAT IS HAPPENING AT THE SAME TIME. THIS IS STANDARD PROCEDURE. ANYTIME THAT THERE IS AN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING. AND SO AT THE MOMENT, WE HAVE SEEN THAT A FEW ROADS HAVE BEEN CLOSED AND EARLIER TODAY AT AROUND 12:00, WE ALSO KNOW THAT LUCAS ELEMENTARY DUAL LANGUAGE ACADEMY, WHICH IS LESS THAN A MILE AWAY, WAS ALSO PLACED ON A BRIEF PRECAUTIONARY LOCKDOWN. A man was shot and killed by an officer in Ceres on Friday morning, according to police. The Ceres Police Department said that around 11:40 a.m. officers responded to a report of a man brandishing a knife toward his family members at a residence on Dirk Court. Police said information from dispatchers helped officers determine the man had a warrant for his arrest for multiple charges including domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon. The charges were all related to a past incident with the Modesto Police Department. According to Ceres police, when officers arrived at the scene at Dirk Court the man ran from them. Officers chased him through the yards of residential homes and backup was requested. A Modesto PD K9 unit helped with tracking the suspect. He was found inside a vehicle on 6th Street, police said. The man was shot after officers attempted to take him into custody, according to police. Officers attempted life-saving measures but the suspect died at the scene. Police have not provided details on what happened when they tried to arrest the suspect. Javier Lopez, the mayor of Ceres, told KCRA 3 that a police officer suffered minor injuries after a person attempted to stab them. It is unclear when that happened. No other officers were injured, the mayor said. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office is providing traffic control in the area.This is a developing story. Stay with KCRA 3 for the latest.
