Man dies after assault near Sacramento County Main Jail

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Police are investigating a deadly assault Monday in downtown Sacramento.

The Sacramento Police Department said around 4 a.m. officers responded to reports of an assault in the 500 block of I Street. This is between 6th and 7th streets, near the Sacramento County Main Jail.

The man had significant injuries and Sacramento police said in an update he died at the scene. The man’s identity hasn’t been released and it’s unclear what led up to the assault.

Sacramento police said it detained a man at the scene, but there is no information on possible charges.

I Street between 6th and 7th Street is closed while officers investigate. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
