BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who admitted punching, biting and strangling a 66-year-old man has been found incompetent to stand trial on charges including murder.

Tyrell Cooper, 42, was examined by a doctor who determined he was not competent, a judge said Tuesday, meaning he doesn’t understand the criminal proceedings against him and can’t assist his attorney in preparing a defense.

He’s due back in court next month, when it will be determined where he’ll be sent for efforts to be made to restore him to competency.

Witnesses reported Cooper repeatedly pistol-whipped Harry Eugene Clark inside a home on Clyde Street, north of East Brundage Lane and east of South King Street. They said Cooper also threatened to kill others in the home, according to court documents.

Arrested soon after the assault, Cooper told police he’d heard second-hand about disparaging remarks Clark made about him, documents said. He acknowledged sometimes hearing voices when no one was there, according to the documents.
