A man suspected of killing his mother in Santa Ana turned himself in to police and was arrested, the Santa Ana Police Department said Monday.

Richard Towers, 50, was charged Wednesday, Feb. 7 with murder and elder and dependent adult abuse with a sentencing enhancement for great bodily injury to an elderly victim, according to court records. Towers is accused of killing 82-year-old Shirley Towers in January, according to the criminal complaint.

Santa Ana police say they were called to a local hospital Jan. 15 regarding suspected elder abuse. Shirley Towers was brought in unconscious with multiple wounds on her legs that police say were consistent with neglect.

Shirley Towers was pronounced dead at the hospital on Jan. 25 and an arrest warrant was issued for Richard Towers, police said. Police had sought public assistance in locating Towers. He turned himself in Monday, police said on social media.

Anyone with information on the case was asked to call the Santa Ana Police Department Special Crimes Section, Detective M. Thomas (714) 245-8346, or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
