Man arrested in connection with multiple Modesto shootings

MODESTO, Calif. — A man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with multiple shootings in Modesto.

Gabriel Martinez, 46 of Modesto, was arrested and booked into a county jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a gun and an unrelated warrant.

According to Modesto Police Department, the investigation first dated back to Dec. 5, 2023 when police responded to a shooting in the area of Spruce and Madison streets. A woman was taken to a hospital with at least one gunshot wound and is recovering.

Police eventually identified Martinez as the suspect and got a warrant for attempted murder. While the search for Martinez continued, police said they learned of other crimes he allegedly committed. Those include crimes dating back to March 2023, November and December. Martinez was accused of threatening victims, all described as a adults, with a gun but no injuries were reported.

He was found Thursday at a home along the 300 block of Covena Avenue. Police leveraged their SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Teams due to the nature of the alleged crimes and Martinez’s alleged comments about evading arrest.

He was taken into custody around 1 p.m.
