Fire officials said the lightning struck the home, causing a fire that ultimately made it a total loss.

NEWCASTLE, Calif. — A mobile home in Placer County was a total loss after a lightning strike hit it and caused a fire.

The Newcastle Fire Protection District initially responded to a call about lightning hitting a power pole or transformer around 6:50 p.m. at the Castle City Mobile Home Community, but when crews arrived, they learned it was actually a mobile home that was hit.

Battalion Chief John Williamson said the fire was fully-involved and left the home a total loss.

According to Williamson, the person living in that mobile home said she heard the boom, saw a flash and went outside to see what was going on but quickly learned her home was on fire.

“It was all of a sudden busting glass and walls falling in, just almost like a tornado,” said Tammi Salmon, who lives near the home that was hit.

Ultimately, no injuries were reported during the blaze.

Williamson said the fire district is familiar with lightning strikes causing wildland fires but lightning starting a house fire is much rarer.
