Kern Valley State Prison inmate attacked, killed on April 5: CDCR

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified an inmate who was fatally assaulted at Kern Valley State Prison on Friday.

Coroner officials say David W. Dodd, 58, was assaulted at the prison and died at the scene.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Dodd was allegedly attacked in a fight with another inmate, identified as Michael Darden, Jr., 47.

Darden allegedly struck Dodd with an makeshift weapon, according to CDCR officials.

Medical staff was called to the scene and said Dodd was stabbed multiple times. He was taken to an medical facility at the prison where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the incident.

No other inmates or officials were injured.
