How can I help if I witness a car accident

Famed actor Harrison Ford recently became a hero in real life when he reacted quickly to assist a driver in distress.  Ford was driving east on a Freeway near Santa Barbara when the driver in front of him lost control of her vehicle and swerved off the road, hitting an embankment.  Ford stopped his vehicle and ran to the car. He and other good Samaritans pulled the driver from the car. Paramedics swiftly arrived and the driver was transported to the hospital.

Becoming a Good Samaritan After a Car Accident

If you have witnessed a car accident, there are steps you can take to assist the car accident victims.  Remember that your safety is your number one priority and you should not take any actions that could put you or the car accident victim in a dangerous situation.

  1. Call 911: Your first step if you witness a car accident should always be to call for emergency assistance.  Report the accident by calling 911.  Provide the emergency dispatcher with complete and accurate information about the crash, including the location of the incident and any potential threat to the safety of the accident victims.
  2. Ensure your own safety: If a car accident happens in front of or around you, pull over to the nearest safe location and put on your hazard lights.  Consider stopping near the closest soft shoulder.  Make sure you are a safe distance away from the scene of the accident.
  3. Check on the accident victims: If, and only if, it is safe to approach the accident scene, you can attempt to check on the accident victims.  It is best to avoid moving car accident victims because you could injure them further.  However, if there is an urgent danger, such as a fire or the vehicle is submerged in water, then moving the victim may be necessary to save his or her life.

Contact an experienced Los Angeles car accident attorney if you or a loved one is injured in an accident. You have a limited time within which to file a claim following a car accident, so do not delay.
