IT FOLLOWS A STRETCH OF DEADLY SEVERE WEATHER ACROSS SEVERAL STATES OVER THE PAST WEEK. WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT JACKIE DEFUSCO JOINS US LIVE THIS MORNING AND, JACKIE, THAT EXTREME WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SUMMER. YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT. GOVERNMENT FORECASTERS ARE EXPECTING AN ABOVE NORMAL ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON. AND ON TOP OF THAT, MANY COMMUNITIES ARE CURRENTLY BRACING FOR ANOTHER SUMMER OF EXTREME HEAT. IT ALL COMES AS THAT CLEANUP EFFORT FROM THOSE RECENT STORMS CONTINUES. MORE THAN 20 PEOPLE DEAD AND A TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION AFTER A SERIES OF POWERFUL STORMS HIT SEVERAL STATES OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. I’VE LOST A ROOF. I’VE LOST WINDOWS. I AIN’T NEVER SEEN NOTHING LIKE THIS. AND IT’S JUST THE START OF WHAT’S EXPECTED TO BE A SUMMER OF SEVERE WEATHER. THAT TREND TOWARDS MORE FREQUENT AND MORE INTENSE, UH, EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS IS BEING DRIVEN BY HUMAN CAUSED WARMING. THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION IS FORECASTING AN ABOVE AVERAGE ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON SPANNING FROM JUNE 1ST TO NOVEMBER 30TH. THE AGENCY IS PREDICTING 17 TO 25 NAMED STORMS, WITH UP TO 13 EXPECTED TO BECOME HURRICANES. THIS MAY’S OUTLOOK HAS THE HIGHEST RANGE FOR NUMBERS OF NAMED STORMS, HURRICANES AND MAJOR HURRICANES THAT WE HAVE EVER FORECAST IN THE OFFICIAL OUTLOOKS, THE FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY SAYS NOW IS THE TIME TO GET PREPARED. WE HAVE A FAMILY EMERGENCY PLANNING WEBSITE THAT HELPS YOU BUILD A FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN AND CONTACTS FOR PEOPLE THAT MAY NEED ADDITIONAL CARE. UH, MAKING A KIT. GOV LATISHA AND JACKIE, ARE THERE ANY STEPS PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE NOW TO PREPARE FOR THOSE HIGH TEMPERATURES? YEAH, THE FIRST ONE THAT FEMA SAYS YOU SHOULD DO IS JUST BE FAMILIAR WITH THE SIGNS OF HEAT RELATED ILLNESS SO YOU CAN RECOGNIZE THEM IN YOURSELF AND OTHERS. ALSO, JUST LIKE YOU WOULD BEFORE A HURRICANE, MAKE AN EMERGENCY PLAN, INCLUDING MAPPING OUT SOME PLACES IN YOUR COMMUNITY WHERE YOU CAN GO TO COOL DOWN LIKE A COOLING CENTER OR EVEN A PUBLIC LIBRARY. THEY ALSO RECOMMEND THAT YOU WEATHERSTRIP DOORS AND WINDOWS, INSTALL AIR CONDITIONERS AND INSULATE THEM. THEY ALSO HIGHLIGHT THAT YOU REALLY SHOULDN’T RELY ON A FAN ALONE IN AN EXTREME HEAT SITUATION, BECAUSE IT’S REALLY JUST CIRCULATING AIR, AND IT’S NOT GOING TO LOWER YOUR BODY TEMPERATURE. LASTLY, THERE MAY BE MANY PEOPLE WATCHING THIS THAT COULD BE STRUGGLING TO PAY FOR THEIR COOLING ASSISTANCE. YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL HELP. A fire displaced six occupants on Mellowdawn Way in Orangevale on Sunday, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said.Crews arrived at the scene of a well-involved fire in a duplex home. No injuries have been reported, but one cat was found dead. Moderate damage has been seen after the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Red Cross will be helping those who were displaced with shelter.
