CHP motorcyclist seriously injured in Placer County after driver runs red light and hits him

A California Highway Patrol motorcyclist is seriously injured after a driver who ran a red light hit them in Placer County, officials said.The crash happened around 6:35 a.m. along Highway 49 at Shale Ridge Road near the Auburn area, CHP said. A vehicle was going southbound on Highway 49, blew past the red light and hit the CHP officer who was going northbound toward Shale Ridge Road, ejecting him.”She stopped, thought it was clear, and then proceeded through the intersection, but it was still a red light,” said Yvete Norman the spokesperson at CHP Auburn. “Through the driver’s admission, she was late to work.”CHP said the officer was transported to the hospital with major injuries.Major front bumper damage can be seen on the vehicle that hit the motorcycle.CHP said the crash happened at a 55 mph zone. Along Highway 49, the area changes from 45 mph to 55 and then eventually 65 mph.Highway 49 was closed from Shale Ridge Road to Dry Creek Road for five hours. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the accident.The officer injured is a CHP sergeant and has been with the agency for about 15 years. He works in the CHP-North Sacramento division and was on duty at the time as he drove home. Those in the motor unit are considered on duty from the moment they leave their home to start their shift until they arrive home at the end of the shift.Katlin Yates and other Auburn residents told KCRA that some drivers become impatient when traffic lights take too long to change.When asked about concerns with the traffic lights at Shale Ridge Road and Highway 49, Officer Norman said she hadn’t heard about those complaints.”If anyone is ever finding that those things are happening, they can call into our office and report those things,” Norman added.CHP said that the place where the crash happened has had five collisions in the last three years.The driver of the vehicle was not injured.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app.
