A 5-year-old boy was pulled from the water at Bethel Island on Saturday, May 11, 2024, after having gone missing.

A local responder pulled a 5-year-old boy out of the water who was drowning off Bethel Island and took him to a hospital on Saturday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said.

Firefighters were called at about 4:45 p.m. to a report of a missing child in the 400 block of Halcyon Place on Bethel Island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. A rescue swimmer found the boy submerged in a cove at about 5:10 p.m., said Capt. Joe Ottolini, a spokesperson for the district.

The child received CPR and was taken to a hospital. Ottolini said he didn’t know the boy’s status.

The boy was reportedly visiting his grandparents on the island.

Ottolini said circumstances of the drowning weren’t clear because of language differences.
