The California Capitol building is lit up in red Thursday night. The light honors the memory of missing and murdered Indigenous people.Ahead of nightfall, hundreds gathered to hold a candlelight vigil on the west steps, including First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom.The observance highlighted the disproportionate case numbers of violence against Native Americans. Both the Yurok Tribe and Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians have declared states of emergency because of the number of missing persons on their reservations. “We stand with those fighting for a better future,” Siebel Newsom said.The national day to commemorate missing or murdered Indigenous people is May 5.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app.
