Can I recover damages for a traumatic brain injury?

Individuals who suffer traumatic brain injuries are often left with lingering pain and suffering as well as emotional and financial burdens. In some cases, victims nay require lifelong care. While there are many causes for head and brain injuries, if you were injured due to another’s negligence, you may be entitled to meaningful compensation.

Common Causes of Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries occur when an external force causes the brain to malfunction. The external force can be the result of a violent blow or jolt to the head or body or an object penetrating the skull.

While traumatic brain injuries are often caused by automobile, motorcycle and bicycle accidents, the most common cause is falls. Individuals are frequently injured from falling down stairs or off of  ladders, but even slipping in the bathtub or falling out of bed can result in a serious head injury. Of course, football players who suffer concussions has drawn a lot of media attention, but head injuries can also arise in other sports such as boxing, soccer, baseball and hockey. Finally, acts of violence, gunshots and explosions can also lead to brain injuries.

The degree of these injuries can vary and the symptoms can range from a nagging headache to complete paralysis. In particular, a mild traumatic brain injury may cause temporary  brain dysfunction along with physical effects and emotional harm. On the other hand, more significant injuries may lead to bruising, bleeding or tissue damage, ultimately resulting in permanent impairment or death.

Treatment for Traumatic Brain Injuries

Treating brain injuries depends on the severity of the injury. While minor injuries can be treated with rest and over the counter medication, aftereffects may not be evident until long after the initial accident. For this reason, victims must be closely monitored for symptoms that linger or become worse.

However, moderate to severe injuries usually require immediate medical care. It is crucial for victims to have adequate blood and oxygen supply to the brain to minimize the damage. In some cases surgery may be needed to reduce inflammation or to stop bleeding, and these victims may require ongoing rehabilitation to relearn how to walk or talk.

In the end, traumatic brain injuries can have long lasting consequences not only for the victims but their families as well. If you or a loved one has suffered an injury that was caused by another’s reckless or intentional actions, you should engage the services of the experienced personal injury attorneys at the J&Y law firm.
