THIS IS KCRA THREE NEWS AT FIVE. THOUSANDS OF ACRES. BURNED IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY. CREWS CONTINUE THEIR FIGHT AGAINST THE CORRAL FIRE, THE LATEST IN THE BATTLE TO GET THE FIRE FULLY CONTAINED. PLUS GOING BEHIND THE FIRE LINES WILL HAVE A CLOSE UP LOOK AT FIREFIGHTING EFFORTS ON THE GROUND AND SACRAMENTO FIREFIGHTERS WERE ALSO BUSY TODAY. THE HOUSE FIRE THAT LEFT HALF A DOZEN PEOPLE WITHOUT A PLACE TO STAY. CREWS CONTINUE BATTLING THE CORRAL FIRE IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY THIS EVENING. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US AT FIVE. I’M ANDREA FLORES AND I’M BRITTANY HELP. IT BROKE OUT AT AROUND 230 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND HAS GROWN THOUSANDS OF ACRES SINCE. THIS IS AN EXCLUSIVE AERIAL VIEW OF THE FIRE FROM LIVECOPTER3. WE FLEW OVER THE BURN AREA EARLIER TODAY. ACCORDING TO THE LATEST UPDATE FROM CAL FIRE. THE FIRE HAS BURNED 14,000 ACRES AND IS NOW 30% CONTAINED. WE KNOW ONE STRUCTURE WAS DESTROYED, A HOME NEAR THE GOLF COURSE NEAR CHRISMAN ROAD, WESTBOUND 580 IS NOW BACK OPEN, BUT ON EASTBOUND 580, THE NUMBER ONE LANE IS OPEN AND THE NUMBER TWO LANE IS CLOSED FROM CORRAL HOLLOW ROAD TO SOUTH BIRD ROAD AT LAST CHECK, EVACUATION ORDERS REMAIN IN EFFECT. PEOPLE FROM CORRAL HOLLOW ROAD TO SOUTH OF WHERE FIVE, 80 AND INTERSTATE FIVE JOINED TOGETHER, ARE UNDER MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS. AT THIS POINT, THOSE WEST OF THE CALIFORNIA AQUEDUCT HAVE BEEN TOLD TO EVACUATE AS WELL. NOW THAT EVACUATE, ORDER IS STRETCHING WEST TO ALAMEDA COUNTY AND SOUTH TO STANISLAUS COUNTY. CAL FIRE NOW TELLING US THOSE EVACUATION ORDERS ARE SET TO BE DOWNGRADED TO WARNINGS WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR BY 6 P.M., ROADS WILL CONTINUE TO BE CLOSED FOR NON RESIDENTS. A TEMPORARY EVACUATION AREA IS OPEN AT LARGE. CLOVER COMMUNITY CENTER IN TRACY TONIGHT. THAT’S AT 11 157 WEST LARCH ROAD, A LARGE ANIMAL SHELTER IS SET UP AT THE MANTECA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BUILDING AT 2271 WEST LOUISE AVENUE IN MANTECA. AS THE FIRE CONTINUES TO BURN, WE HAVE LIVE TEAM COVERAGE FOR YOU THIS EVENING. KCRA 3’S MICHELLE BANDUR IS IN A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT HAS BEEN HEAVILY IMPACTED BY THIS FIRE. BUT FIRST, WE WANT TO START WITH METEOROLOGIST DIRK VERDOORN NOW WHO IS TRACKING THE FIRE CONDITIONS. SO DIRK, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TODAY AND YESTERDAY? YEAH, WELL, WE HAD A SHIFT IN THE WINDS THIS MORNING. AND NOW WE’RE SEEING THOSE WEST WINDS, THOSE STRONGER WEST WINDS THAT WE HAD YESTERDAY STARTING TO PICK UP AGAIN TODAY. SO WE HAVE THAT WESTERLY FLOW MAKING ITS WAY THROUGH THE AREA RIGHT NOW WE’RE SEEING WIND GUSTS BETWEEN 20 TO 30MPH. SO IT’S NOT AS STRONG AS IT WAS YESTERDAY. BUT IT’S GOING TO BE PRETTY CONSISTENT AS WE GO THROUGH THE NIGHT TONIGHT. AGAIN, THE GOOD NEWS IS, IS THAT MOST OF THE FIRE IS STARTING TO TAPER OFF A LITTLE BIT. SO WE’RE GOING TO SEE THIS AGAIN, ESPECIALLY HERE ON THE EASTERN SIDE. WE’VE SEEN THAT REALLY START REALLY TAKING OVER. AND IT LOOKS LIKE THAT’S WHERE WE HAVE MOST OF THE CONTAINMENT. BUT THERE’S STILL A LOT OF BURNING HERE IN THE MORE DIFFICULT AREAS TO GET TO. YOU CAN SEE AS YOU GET INTO THE MORE RUGGED PARTS OF THE HILLS THERE. BUT RIGHT NOW WE’RE SEEING AGAIN GUSTS OF ABOUT 26MPH OUT OF THE TRACY AIRPORT. THAT’S EXPECTED TO STAY ABOUT THAT RANGE, IF NOT GET A LITTLE BIT STRONGER AS WE GO THROUGH THE NIGHT. TONIGHT, HERE WE ARE ABOUT 915. WE HAVE GUSTS CLOSE TO 30MPH, AND THAT’S GOING TO BE INDICATIVE OF THE WINDS THAT WE’LL SEE IN ALONG THE EASTERN SLOPE HERE OF THE COASTAL MOUNTAINS. BUT YOU GET INTO THE HIGHER TERRAIN TOPS, THOSE MOUNTAINS, THOSE WINDS ARE GOING TO BE STRONGER. WE’RE LOOKING AT WIND GUSTS OF 30 TO 40MPH. SO THOSE WINDS ARE GOING TO STAY ACTIVE THROUGH THE NIGHT TONIGHT AND INTO TOMORROW MORNING. SO THAT’S THE LATEST WITH THE WINDS. NOW BACK OVER TO YOU DIRK. THANK YOU. SO MUCH. KCRA 3’S MICHELLE BANDUR CONTINUING OUR LIVE TEAM COVERAGE NOW. SHE’S LIVE IN THE HARDEST HIT NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR STEARMAN AND BERNARD ROSE IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY. THIS IS WHERE THE FIRE DESTROYED AT LEAST ONE HOME. MICHELLE, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO SEE OUT THERE? WELL, WE’RE STANDING IN FRONT OF THAT HOME THAT WAS DESTROYED ON BERNARD ROAD. IT IS. THERE IS NOTHING LEFT HERE. THERE’S JUST SHELLED OUT VEHICLES INSIDE ON THE PROPERTY. WE’VE GOT THE PALM TREES OUT FRONT THAT ARE COMPLETELY CHARRED AS WELL. WE’RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET INSIDE OF THE PROPERTY LATER AND SHOW YOU AT 530, WITH PERMISSION FROM THE FAMILY, BUT WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THIS NEIGHBORHOOD HERE, YOU KNOW, LOOKING AT THIS NEIGHBORHOOD AND ALL OF THE HOMES AND THE CHARRED HILLSIDES AROUND HERE, IT’S INCREDIBLE THAT MORE HOMES WERE NOT DESTROYED AND THE FLAMES FROM THE CURTIS PROPERTY HERE JUMPED BERNARD ROAD. TAKE A LOOK AND ACTUALLY CAUGHT FIRE. THIS TRUCK CAUGHT FIRE. YOU CAN SEE THAT IT’S CHARRED HERE. IT CONTINUED ON AND YOU CAN SEE THE GRASS HERE IS BURNED, WENT THROUGH THIS FENCE AND EVEN BURNED MORE PROPERTY, MORE OF THE GRASS OVER HERE. BUT THEN THEY WERE ABLE FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONTAIN IT. IT STOPPED. NOW WE SPOKE TO ONE RESIDENT WHO LIVES ON THIS SIDE OF THE STREET, ONE HOUSE OVER FROM WHERE THE ONE HOME BURNED, AND AFTER EVACUATING HIS FAMILY, GETTING THEM TO SAFETY, HE REFUSED TO LEAVE AND FOUGHT THE FIRE WITH A GARDEN HOSE AND A CRUTCH. EVERYTHING AROUND US IS BURNING. ALL MY NEIGHBORS ARE BURNING, ALL THE NEIGHBORHOODS BURNING. EVERYTHING IS BURNING. PHONE IS GOING CRAZY. ALL DAY LONG. PEOPLE ARE WORRIED ABOUT YOU. OH YEAH, 100%. WE COULDN’T LEAVE. WE COULDN’T. NO ONE COULD COME IN. NO ONE COULD LEAVE. UH, IT’S JUST BEEN WILD. THE FIRES WERE JUST INSANE. 200 FOOT FLAMES SMOKE EVERYWHERE. COULDN’T BREATHE. YOU GOT YOUR SPRINKLERS. THE FLAMES JUMPED OVER THE EMBERS JUMPED OVER THROUGH THE JUNIPER TREES AND LIT THOSE UP. AND THEN I HAD MY GARDEN HOSES GOING BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT ALL THE EMBERS THAT WERE FLYING OVER TO MY PROPERTY. I WAS JUST PUTTING THEM OUT WITH THE GARDEN HOSE, TRYING TO SAVE MY NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE OVER HERE AND MY OTHER NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE OVER THERE, AND. BUT WE WATCHED THEIR TRAVEL. AND WHEN THE WIND PICKED UP THE FIRE MOVED SO FAST THAT IT WAS JUST SHOWED UP WITHIN MINUTES. LIKE YOU COULDN’T DO ANYTHING. YOU’RE TRYING TO SAVE HOUSES, NEIGHBOR’S HOUSES BURNT TO THE GROUND. YEAH, IT WAS A VERY, VERY, UH, SAD THING TO SEE. JUST PEOPLE’S HOUSES. JUST BURNING UP YARDS, BURNING UP. UNFORTUNATELY, OUR NEIGHBOR RIGHT THERE LOST THEIR WHOLE ENTIRE HOUSE. BACK OUT HERE LIVE. THIS IS THE PROPERTY OF THE HOME THAT WAS LOST. YOU KNOW, IT’S JUST INCREDIBLE THAT KERN GILL WAS ABLE TO GET ALL THAT VIDEO TO REALLY SHOW US HOW INTENSE THAT FIREFIGHT WAS. AND, YOU KNOW, HE’S RECOVERING FROM FOOT SURGERY. HE HE SAID AT ONE POINT, HE JUST THREW THAT CRUTCH DOWN. SO THAT HE COULD CONTINUE TO FIGHT. HE SAID IT WAS JUST GETTING IN HIS WAY. NOW, WE DID SPEAK TO THE SON OF THE PROPERTY OWNERS HERE OF THE CURTISES, WHO WE’RE GOING TO HEAR MORE FROM THEM. AND HE TELLS ME HOW HIS PARENTS JUST HAD ABOUT 10 TO 15 MINUTES TO GET OUT, GRAB THEIR TWO DOGS, THEIR TURTLE GOT TO SAFETY. THEY’RE OKAY. WE’RE GOING TO HEAR MORE FROM THEM COMING UP AT 530, REPORTING LIVE IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY. MICHELLE BANDUR KCRA THREE NEWS. SO GLAD TO HEAR THAT THEY’RE OKAY. MICHELLE. THAT WAS REALLY THE NEIGHBORHOOD IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY THAT WE WERE FOCUSING ON LAST NIGHT. KCRA 3’S LEE ANNE DENYER IS ALSO IN THE FIRE AREA TONIGHT AND JOINS US LIVE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA HOLLOW ROAD NEAR INTERSTATE 580. SO LEANNE’S REALLY ON THE NORTH END OF WHERE THOSE EVACUATIONS WERE HAPPENING AND WHERE THAT FIRE AREA WAS. LEANNE, WHAT ARE YOU SEEING NOW? WHERE YOU ARE? WELL, I THINK THE FIRST THING WE NOTICED WHEN WE STOPPED HERE ON THE ROAD IS THAT WIND THAT DIRK WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT. A COUPLE OF TIMES I’VE WONDERED IF MY IF MY HAT WAS GOING TO FLY OFF BECAUSE WE ARE FEELING THOSE STRONG WINDS. AND WHILE IMPROVEMENTS ARE HAPPENING, I DO WANT TO POINT THIS OUT THERE IS A ROAD CLOSURE. THE ON RAMP HERE TO 580 IS STILL BLOCKED OFF. YOU CAN SEE CALTRANS TRUCK RIGHT THERE AND THE ORANGE CONES. AND WE’VE SEEN SOME FOLKS HAVE TO HAVE TO REROUTE AS THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE THEIR WAY ON 580. I HAVE TO SAY IT WAS PRETTY STARTLING COMING DOWN FIVE BECAUSE VERY QUICKLY WE SAW THE IMPACTS THAT THIS FIRE HAD HAD. AND I WANT TO GIVE YOU JUST A GLIMPSE OF KIND OF WHAT YOU SEE AS YOU’RE TRAVELING, TRAVELING ALONG THIS PART OF OUR REGION. I’M CURIOUS TO IF YOU GUYS CAN HEAR THE WIND THAT WE’RE THAT WE’RE FEELING AND HEARING OUT HERE. BUT AGAIN, THIS IS WHAT WE WERE SEEING AS WE MADE OUR WAY DOWN TO GET TO THIS LOCATION WHERE WE’RE STANDING RIGHT NOW, THE ROAD IS CLOSED, BUT THANKFULLY WE WERE ABLE TO TO COME BEHIND THE CLOSURE LINE AND AND BE ABLE TO SHOW YOU THESE PICTURES. THERE’S ONE OTHER THING THAT I WANT TO POINT OUT TO YOU. WE KNOW THAT THIS HAS BEEN A CHALLENGING FIRE FOR FIREFIGHTERS BECAUSE OF THAT WIND, BUT I ALSO WANTED TO POINT OUT HERE THIS YOU CAN KIND OF GET AN EXAMPLE OF OF WHAT WAS BURNING WITH THIS DRY, UH, GRASS ON THE GROUND WITH, UM, JUST TO KIND OF GET A, GET A PICTURE OF WHAT THE TERRAIN IS LIKE AROUND HERE. BUT WE’RE GOING TO BE CHECKING IN WITH CAL FIRE. UM, TRYING TO GET SOME MORE INFORMATION, KEEPING AN UPDATE, KEEPING YOU ALL UPDATED ON WHAT WE’RE WHAT WE’RE SEEING OUT HERE. UH, BUT THANKFULLY, THAT LATEST REPORT COMING IN THAT THE EVACUATION EVACUATION ORDER WILL BE MADE INTO A WARNING WILL BE COMING UP IN THE NEXT HOUR OR SO IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, LEE ANNE DENYER KCRA THREE NEWS. AND, LEANNE, YOU CAN SEE WITH ALL OF THAT DRY FUEL AROUND THERE, IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY THOSE FLAMES SPREAD SO QUICKLY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A LIVE LOOK KCRA THROUGH THERE AND HAVE SPENT THE MORNING TRAVELING BEHIND THE FIRE LINE. SHE HAS AN UP CLOSE LOOK AT THE EFFORTS ON THE GROUND. SMOKE RISING FROM THE HILLS AND VALLEYS SOUTHWEST OF THE CITY OF TRACY. LINES OF WILDLAND FIRE TRUCKS, ONE BY ONE, WORKING THEIR WAY BACK ON THE ROADS THAT WIND THEIR WAY THROUGH THE THOUSANDS OF ACRES WHICH ARE NOW BURNED. BLACK. WE HAVE CREWS FROM ALL OVER CALIFORNIA THAT ARE HERE, ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN DIRECT SUPPRESSION EFFORTS. AT THIS POINT, WE MADE OUR WAY SUNDAY MORNING BACK BEHIND FIRE LINES, WITNESSING THE MANY HOMES STANDING UNSCATHED AMONG THE BURNED HILLS, THE SCORCHED EARTH STILL WARM BENEATH OUR FEET. WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING AT HERE IS CORRAL HOLLOW ROAD, THE NAMESAKE OF THE CORRAL FIRE, THE ORIGIN OF WHERE THE FIRE IGNITED, ACCORDING TO CAL FIRE. BACK WITHIN THESE HILLS, WE HAVE INVESTIGATORS ON SCENE, BOTH CAL FIRE INVESTIGATORS AND SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATORS ARE OUT COMBING THROUGH THE AREA OF ORIGIN AND TRY TO PINPOINT EXACTLY WHAT CAUSED THIS HEAT. STILL RISING FROM THE GROUND, LOGS OF WOOD HOLLOWED OUT AND BURNING FROM WITHIN, FIREFIGHTERS INTENTIONALLY SETTING SOME OF THE GRASS ABLAZE, TRYING TO FURTHER MITIGATE ANY RISK. WE’RE BRINGING THE FIRE AND ALLOWING US TO TO ENGAGE IT ON OUR TERMS. AT THAT POINT, THERE’S A LOT OF THINGS THAT ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN WE DO STUFF LIKE THAT. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WINDS ARE IN OUR FAVOR. UM, IT’S NOT JUST A TACTIC THAT WE USE WILLY NILLY. THE LARGEST FIRE CAL FIRE HAS UNDERTAKEN THIS YEAR, BRINGING ALL THE ELEMENTS TO CREATE QUITE THE CHALLENGE. A LOT OF THAT HAD TO DO WITH A BUNCH OF CONDITIONS LINING UP. WE HAD VERY, VERY TALL, DRY GRASS. IT WAS VERY, VERY DENSE. IT HAD TWO YEARS WORTH OF GROWTH IN IT COUPLED WITH THE VERY, VERY STRONG WINDS, AND IT LINED UP PERFECTLY WITH THE TOPOGRAPHY THAT’S OUT HERE. SO, YOU KNOW, WE HAD THREE SUBSTANTIAL, UH, FACTORS, ALL COME INTO ALIGNMENT AND REALLY ALLOW THIS FIRE TO TO GROW AT A VERY RAPID RATE IN TRACY ERIN HEFT KCRA THREE NEWS CAL FIRE ESTIMATES IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL DAYS IF NOT LONGER, FOR A FULL INVESTIGATION ON FOR THE VERY LATEST ON THIS FIRE, MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE KCRA 3 APP. YOU CAN GET UPDATES FOR ANY FIRES THAT BREAK OUT IN OUR REGION. JUST BY TURNING ON YOUR PUSH ALERTS. WE ALSO HAVE TIPS TO STAY PREPARED. CAL FIRE CREWS ARE ALSO BATTLING A SMALL VEGETATION FIRE IN BUTTE COUNTY. THE VEGETATION FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE BANGOR AREA THIS AFTERNOON, SO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS. ACCORDING TO CAL FIRE, THE FIRE IS HOLDING AT TWO ACRES. YOU CAN SEE SOME SMOKE THERE IN THE CENTER OF YOUR SCREEN. NO STRUCTURES ARE THREATENED RIGHT NOW. CREWS ARE ON SCENE TO WORK ON FULL CONTAINMENT. AT THIS POINT, NO ONE WAS HURT. THE CAUSE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION. SACRAMENTO FIREFIGHTERS BATTLED A GRASS FIRE EARLY THIS MORNING. IT HAPPENED ON RAMONA AVENUE NEAR THE NORTHWEST PALLET BUSINESS. WE’RE TOLD THE PALLET YARD WAS NOT IMPACTED AS CREWS WORK TO PUT OUT THOSE FLAMES. THEY TELL US THEY HAD TO SHUT DOWN THE RAILROAD TRACKS TO GET THEIR WATER HOSE TO THE FIRE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. SIX PEOPLE ARE DISPLACED AFTER A DUPLEX FIRE THIS MORNING. SACRAMENTO METRO FIRE SHARED THIS VIDEO OF THEM RESPONDING TO THAT. FIRE CREWS ARRIVED TO FIND A DUPLEX ENGULFED IN FLAMES. YOU CAN SEE HERE ON THE SIDE OF THAT DUPLEX, SIX PEOPLE INSIDE WERE ABLE TO GET OUT SAFELY.
