NORTHRIDGE, CA — One person died and two others were injured Wednesday morning when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Lassen Street, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Officers responded to the two-vehicle collision at approximately 7:53 a.m. Wednesday, according to LAPD and the Los Angeles Fire Department. Aerial footage from the scene showed two heavily damaged, dark-colored vehicles, one of which had come to rest wrapped around a light pole. Los Angeles Fire Department crews worked to extricate the driver of that vehicle, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the crash’s immediate aftermath, the fire department said only that one person was possibly deceased while a second was being evaluated on scene, cautioning that the fatality had not yet been confirmed. The department verified the death shortly after 11:30 a.m., more than three and a half hours after the initial call.

Two other people involved in the crash were transported to a hospital. Their conditions and identities had not been released as of Thursday. The identity of the person who died has also not been made public, pending notification of next of kin.

The intersection remained closed for several hours Wednesday while officers investigated and cleared the roadway. LAPD has not said what led to the collision, and no citations or arrests had been announced as of Thursday. Investigators have not indicated whether excessive speed, alcohol or another factor played a role.

Northridge Road Safety and Accidents

Reseda Boulevard is one of the principal north-south arterials running through the San Fernando Valley, connecting the 118 Freeway to the Ventura Boulevard corridor to the south. The stretch through Northridge falls under the jurisdiction of LAPD’s Devonshire Division, part of the department’s Valley Bureau, which also patrols Chatsworth, Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, Canoga Park and Winnetka. Wednesday’s crash occurred just before 8 a.m., during the height of the weekday morning commute.

Citywide, Los Angeles recorded 302 traffic fatalities in 2024, down from 345 the year before, according to an analysis of LAPD Traffic Division data. That marked the second consecutive year that traffic deaths in the city outpaced homicides, which totaled 268 in 2024. Within the department’s Valley Bureau, seven patrol divisions recorded a combined 98 traffic deaths in 2024, a total matching the combined figure from the four South Bureau divisions that logged the city’s highest station-level counts. The city’s ongoing Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate traffic deaths altogether, though citywide fatalities have declined only gradually since the program’s adoption.

Statewide, California recorded 4,061 traffic fatalities in 2023, an 11% decrease from 4,539 the year before, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. The state’s 2023 mileage death rate — fatalities per 100 million miles traveled — was 1.26, down 6% from 1.34 in 2022. Los Angeles County continues to account for roughly a quarter of California’s traffic deaths each year.

California Civil Liability

Under California law, drivers owe other motorists a duty of reasonable care, a standard codified in Civil Code Section 1714. A driver who violates a traffic law enacted to protect public safety — including the Vehicle Code’s basic speed law under Section 22350 or the right-of-way requirements in Sections 21800 through 21804 — may be deemed negligent under Evidence Code Section 669’s negligence per se doctrine, provided the violation was a substantial factor in causing the crash.

Investigators examining two-vehicle intersection collisions typically evaluate several potential contributing factors, including whether a driver failed to yield the right-of-way under Vehicle Code Section 21800, violated the basic speed law under Section 22350, or disregarded a traffic signal in violation of Section 21453. Determining fault often hinges on physical evidence such as skid marks, vehicle damage patterns and any available traffic-signal or dash-camera footage, along with witness statements collected at the scene.

Because investigators have not yet determined what caused Wednesday’s collision, it remains too early to assign fault to either driver. If a defective traffic signal, a roadway design flaw or another condition tied to a public entity is later found to have contributed to the crash, the timeline for pursuing a claim narrows considerably. California’s Government Claims Act requires that a claim against a public entity be filed within six months of the incident, compared with the two-year statute of limitations under Code of Civil Procedure Section 335.1 that otherwise governs personal injury and wrongful death claims in the state.

The family of the person who died may pursue a wrongful death claim under Code of Civil Procedure Sections 377.60 and 377.61, which allow a decedent’s spouse, children, domestic partner or other qualifying heirs to recover damages for the loss of financial support and companionship. A separate survival action under Section 377.30 could allow the decedent’s estate to recover for medical expenses, pain and suffering or other damages the decedent could have claimed had they survived the crash. The two injured occupants retain independent claims for their own medical costs, lost income and pain and suffering, regardless of how any wrongful death case is resolved.
