Gardena E-Scooter Crash Outside Casino Leaves Man Seriously Injured

GARDENA, CA – A man riding an electric scooter was seriously injured Friday night when he collided with a vehicle near Redondo Beach Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, according to Gardena police.

Officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. Aug. 28. They found the rider lying in the roadway. He was unconscious but breathing, police said. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics took him to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Authorities did not identify the rider or release an update on his condition. CBS Los Angeles reported that the collision occurred near the Hustler Casino and described the man’s injuries as serious.

Gardena Driver remained at the scene

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and stayed to cooperate with investigators. Police have not identified the driver or described the vehicle. They also have not said whether it sustained damage that required towing.

Available reports do not explain how the scooter and vehicle entered the collision point. Police have not disclosed either party’s direction of travel. They also have not said whether the rider was in a travel lane, a crosswalk or another part of the roadway before he was struck.

Video reviewed by CBS Los Angeles showed police vehicles and tape outside the casino after the crash. The recording documented the emergency response but did not show the collision. 

The rider’s condition at the scene makes the timing of witness interviews significant. The public report does not say whether he was able to provide a statement at the hospital. 

Reports say the e-scooter rider was unconscious but breathing when officers found him.

The confirmed facts show that the rider was unconscious when officers arrived and required emergency transport to a trauma center. The motorist stayed at the scene and was not hurt. The cause of the collision and the rider’s later medical condition remained undisclosed.
