Possible DUI in Downtown LA Crash Leaves 1 Dead (Update: Now Identified as German Garcia)
UPDATE 06/09/2026: The victim in this crash has been identified as German Garcia, who was only 20 years old. Garcia was the passenger of a vehicle that crashed into a parked car.
Los Angeles, CA – A two-vehicle collision in downtown Los Angeles left one person dead and another hospitalized Sunday morning, with police suspecting impairment played a role, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Bay Street at 11:50 a.m. on June 7, 2026, after a report of a collision. The location sits in the city’s Fashion District, near the intersection of Bay and Alameda streets. First responders pronounced one person dead, and a second person was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. The victim’s identity had not been released as of Sunday afternoon.
The LAPD confirmed that the preliminary investigation pointed to driving under the influence as a suspected factor. No additional details about the circumstances of the crash — including the makes and models of the vehicles involved, the direction of travel, or the identity of any driver — were immediately available.
Video footage posted to the Citizen App showed debris scattered across the roadway, a silver sedan with significant rear-end damage, and police blocking off the surrounding area as bystanders gathered.
No arrests had been announced as of the time of the initial reports.
DUI Crashes in Los Angeles and death of German Garcia
The Fashion District crash is part of a persistent pattern across the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The California Office of Traffic Safety consistently ranks Los Angeles County among the state’s most active counties for alcohol and drug-involved traffic fatalities. DUI-related deaths in the county occur across all hours and all days of the week, though law enforcement data consistently shows elevated rates during overnight and weekend time windows.
California law sets the legal blood alcohol concentration limit at 0.08% for drivers 21 and older. For commercial drivers, the threshold is 0.04%, and for drivers under 21, any detectable alcohol constitutes a violation. Drugs — including prescription medications, marijuana, and illicit substances — can also form the basis of a DUI charge. California Vehicle Code Section 23153 addresses DUI causing injury or death, a felony offense that carries significantly enhanced penalties compared to a standard misdemeanor DUI charge.
When a DUI driver causes a fatal collision, the criminal process and the civil legal process run on separate tracks. Law enforcement investigates potential criminal charges independently of any civil claim a victim’s family might pursue. In California, the families of people killed in DUI crashes can file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault driver, and in some circumstances, against other parties whose negligence contributed to the crash.
