What Happened on the 10 Freeway
Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived just after 7 p.m. near South Robertson Boulevard in the Palms neighborhood to find a Toyota Prius fully engulfed in flames. Construction worker Jacob Deegan, who was driving behind the collision, told KTLA the suspect vehicle weaved across four lanes before clipping the rear of the Prius, sending it and two other vehicles into the center median where the Prius ignited.
Witness Eve Porinchak described the aftermath as immediately catastrophic. Dense black smoke, minor explosions, and intense heat made approach dangerous, she said.
The Suspect Was Detained by Bystanders
After the impact, the at-fault driver fled the scene on foot down the freeway. Deegan said he was the first to exit his vehicle and, joined by other witnesses, pursued and tackled the man.
“I did tackle him and I got him on the ground and I just asked him, ‘Hey, man, sit right here,'” Deegan said. “He kept trying to run off.”
Bystanders held the suspect until California Highway Patrol officers arrived and took him into custody. Deegan also attempted to break the Prius’s window with a golf club to aid the occupant but was forced back by the intensifying flames.
Victims and Investigation
One woman died in the crash. Two others were hospitalized, including the suspect driver. As of publication, investigators had not publicly identified the deceased victim or the suspect. The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
Legal Significance
This incident presents several potentially actionable claims:
- Wrongful death on behalf of the deceased victim’s family
- Negligence and reckless driving against the at-fault motorist, whose alleged four-lane weave and high-speed lane change constitute conduct well beyond ordinary negligence
- Survival action for the injured surviving victim
- Possible dram shop or employer liability depending on the suspect’s condition and circumstances yet to be disclosed by investigators
Witness testimony — including Deegan’s firsthand account of the lane changes, impact sequence, and the suspect’s attempt to flee — is contemporaneous, consistent, and corroborated by multiple bystanders, strengthening any future civil claim considerably.
The suspect’s flight on foot following the crash may be admissible as consciousness of guilt. His detention by civilians, while legally complex, does not appear to have involved excessive force based on available accounts.
