According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol, officers were called to the scene around 2:13 a.m. The crash occurred north of Dairy Road in an unincorporated area of Yuba County. When responders arrived, they found that a white Toyota Prius had been struck by a passing freight train while positioned on the railroad tracks.

A spokesperson for Union Pacific told the media that members of the train crew observed the woman outside the vehicle shortly before the collision, describing her actions as “frantic.” Following the incident, the freight train was brought to a stop.

How Can Families Seek Compensation After a Fatal Train Accident?
When a loved one loses their life in a train collision, surviving family members may have the right to file a wrongful death claim. In California, certain relatives — such as a spouse, domestic partner, or children — can pursue compensation if negligence played a role in the crash. Depending on the circumstances, liability may involve a railroad company, a vehicle driver, a government entity responsible for crossing maintenance, or another third party. An experienced wrongful death lawyer near Sacramento can evaluate the facts, determine who may be legally responsible, and explain your legal options.
Through a wrongful death claim, families may seek financial recovery for funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and other related damages. Because train accident cases can involve complex investigations and powerful corporate defendants, working with a knowledgeable personal injury lawyer near Sacramento is critical to protecting your rights and preserving evidence early on.
