[02-16-2026] San Diego County – One Person Killed, Another Injured in Hit-and-Run Collision Near Poway
San Diego, California – Authorities are continuing to investigate a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred late Saturday night near Poway, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place around 11:25 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 67 and Scripps Poway Parkway in San Diego County.
Preliminary reports indicate that a 33-year-old man driving a Honda Civic was traveling northbound on SR-67. He entered the intersection intending to turn left onto westbound Scripps Poway Parkway. At the same time, a Chevrolet Tahoe was heading southbound on SR-67 and proceeded into the intersection. The two vehicles collided, resulting in severe damage.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. One passenger involved in the collision suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Another passenger sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigators evaluated the Honda Civic driver and determined he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. However, authorities stated that the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe allegedly left the scene following the collision.
Officials later confirmed that one individual has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. Further details regarding the arrest have not yet been released.
The California Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as the investigation remains active.

Is It Possible to Claim Compensation After a Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash That Also Leaves Someone Seriously Injured?
Yes. Even if the at-fault driver flees the scene, families of a deceased victim and survivors who suffered serious injuries may still be able to recover financial compensation under California law.
In a fatal hit-and-run crash, two types of claims may arise: a wrongful death claim on behalf of the surviving family members, and a personal injury claim for the individual who was seriously hurt.
Wrongful Death Compensation
When someone loses their life due to another driver’s negligence — even in a hit-and-run — certain surviving family members may file a wrongful death claim. This type of claim can seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and emotional support
- Loss of household contributions
If the fleeing driver is identified and arrested, a civil claim can proceed directly against them. However, even if the driver is not immediately located, compensation may still be available through uninsured motorist (UM) coverage or other applicable insurance policies.
An experienced wrongful death lawyer in San Diego can evaluate all available insurance options and determine the best legal path forward.
Compensation for the Seriously Injured Victim
The injured passenger may pursue a personal injury claim for damages such as:
- Medical expenses (emergency care, surgeries, rehabilitation)
- Lost wages and future earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Long-term disability or impairment
In hit-and-run cases, uninsured motorist coverage often plays a critical role. A knowledgeable personal injury lawyer in San Diego can investigate available coverage, gather evidence, and work to hold all responsible parties accountable.
What If the Driver Is Caught?
If law enforcement identifies and arrests the hit-and-run driver, victims may pursue a direct civil lawsuit in addition to any criminal charges the state files. A criminal case does not automatically provide financial compensation — a separate civil claim is typically necessary.
Working with a skilled car accident lawyer in San Diego ensures that your rights are protected while the investigation is ongoing.
