[02-16-2026] Los Angeles County – Hit-and-Run Crash in Manchester Square Leaves Pedestrian Dead
Los Angeles, California – A deadly hit-and-run collision is under investigation in South Los Angeles after a pedestrian was fatally struck Sunday night in the Manchester Square area.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. to the intersection of South Western Avenue and West 82nd Street following reports of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash. Preliminary information indicates the driver was traveling northbound on Western when the vehicle struck a person who was crossing westbound on West 82nd Street.
Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded shortly after officers arrived. Despite emergency efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, age, or gender, pending notification of next of kin.
Police say the motorist failed to stop and render aid, fleeing the area immediately after the collision. Investigators are now working to identify the suspect vehicle and determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
The LAPD’s South Traffic Division has taken over the investigation and is asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Hit-and-run collisions involving pedestrians often raise serious concerns about roadway safety, visibility, and driver accountability. As investigators continue reviewing evidence and seeking witnesses, officials urge drivers to remain at the scene of any crash and comply with California law requiring the exchange of information and reasonable assistance to injured parties.

How Can You Claim Compensation for a Pedestrian Killed in a Hit-and-Run?
When a pedestrian is killed in a hit-and-run crash, surviving family members may still have legal options to pursue compensation — even if the driver has not yet been identified. These cases are legally complex, but financial recovery is often possible through multiple avenues.
-
File a Wrongful Death Claim
In California, certain surviving relatives — such as a spouse, children, or dependent family members — may file a wrongful death claim. A Los Angeles wrongful death attorney can help families pursue compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and guidance
- Emotional suffering
If the hit-and-run driver is identified, a civil lawsuit can be filed directly against that person in addition to any criminal charges they may face.
-
Use Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage
When the at-fault driver cannot be located, compensation may still be available through uninsured motorist coverage. Many auto insurance policies in California include UM benefits that cover pedestrians — even if the victim was not inside a vehicle at the time of the crash.
An experienced hit and run accident attorney can review all available insurance policies, including those belonging to the victim or household family members, to determine whether coverage applies.
-
Investigate All Liable Parties
A thorough investigation may uncover additional responsible parties. For example, there may be:
- A negligent vehicle owner
- A rideshare or commercial employer
- Dangerous roadway conditions contributing to the crash
A skilled Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer will work with investigators, obtain surveillance footage, analyze traffic data, and coordinate with law enforcement to strengthen the civil case.
Do Not Wait to Take Action
California law generally gives families two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit. However, evidence in hit-and-run cases can disappear quickly. Early legal action increases the chances of identifying the driver and securing compensation.
