Collision Occurred Near Youth Soccer Games
Responding officers found the woman and an approximately 4-year-old child after both had been hit by the SUV. Paramedics took the woman to a nearby hospital with major injuries. She later died. The child was hospitalized with injuries that police described as minor and was expected to recover.
Witnesses said the collision occurred in a grassy field where soccer games were being played. The Sunday crash account placed the impact near the school rather than in the travel lanes of Las Palmas Avenue. A soccer game scheduled for later in the day was canceled after the emergency response.
The reporting did not explain how the SUV entered the grass, how far it traveled from the road or whether the vehicle struck any fixed object before or after hitting the pedestrians. Police also had not disclosed the SUV’s direction of travel, its speed or whether the field was separated from the street by a curb, fence or other boundary.

Driver Remained at the Scene Near Las Palmas Elementary
Police said the driver and the involved vehicle remained at the scene. Authorities did not identify the driver or describe any injury to that person. The initial account did not report an arrest, citation or suspected impairment, and investigators had not assigned fault for the SUV’s movement into the area where the woman and child were struck.
A youth soccer coach said the woman was the mother of the injured child and of another child who played on his team. The coach joined a small group that gathered at the scene Sunday night to support the family. The relationship was attributed to the coach because authorities had not released the pedestrians’ identities or provided a separate family notification.
The crash occurred during an afternoon of organized recreation near an elementary school, leaving investigators to determine the SUV’s path from the roadway into the field. Police had not said whether the soccer program, school or another entity controlled the area at the time of the collision.
Sacramento police continued investigating Sunday evening. The latest report said the driver remained at the scene and had not been charged, while the cause of the SUV’s movement and the events immediately before impact remained unresolved.
