Woman Dies After Hayward Pedestrian Collision
HAYWARD, CA – A 73-year-old woman died after a driver struck her Thursday morning near Kelly Street and Bayview Avenue in Hayward, police said. The driver remained at the intersection and cooperated with officers during the fatal collision investigation.
Hayward police received the report at approximately 10:58 a.m. Sept. 17. Officers arrived and found the injured woman at the scene in the northeastern part of the city, near the unincorporated community of Fairview.
Medical personnel treated the woman before taking her to a nearby hospital. She later died from injuries connected to the collision, according to the initial regional account. Authorities withheld her name while relatives were notified and the Alameda County Coroner’s Office completed its formal identification process.
Hayward Pedestrian Crash Driver Remained at Scene
Police described the driver as a 48-year-old Hayward man. He was still at the collision site when officers arrived, and investigators obtained a statement from him. The department did not release his name.
The Police Department said drugs or alcohol were not believed to have contributed to the collision. That preliminary finding addressed only suspected impairment; investigators had not announced a final determination about how the impact occurred.
The department’s public release did not identify the vehicle or state which direction it had been traveling. It also did not describe the woman’s movements before she was struck, say whether she was within a marked crosswalk or identify a traffic-control device at the intersection. Police did not announce an arrest or citation in the initial report.
Those details remained unresolved when the department issued its first statement Thursday. The available account established the time and location, the involvement of one vehicle and a pedestrian, the woman’s fatal injuries and the driver’s presence at the scene. It did not assign responsibility for the collision.
