Honda Crossed Into Southbound Lane in Monterey County Head-On Crash
CHP investigators said a black Nissan Altima was traveling south on Abbott Street while a white Honda CR-V was heading north. For a reason that remained unknown, the Honda entered the southbound lane and collided head-on with the Nissan. The preliminary account did not identify an evasive maneuver by either driver or describe a roadway obstruction before the impact.
Each vehicle carried at least three people. Two passengers in the Honda and one passenger in the Nissan died from their injuries. Both drivers survived, and three people were taken to a local hospital with injuries authorities classified as major. Officials did not release individual medical updates for the survivors or say whether any remained hospitalized Monday.
The large emergency response reflected the number of people involved. Six ambulances arrived at Natividad Medical Center, and hospital staff had initially been told to prepare for as many as 10 patients. The final public count was three deaths and three injured survivors. Authorities did not explain whether the early estimate included additional people who were evaluated at the scene.
Abbott Street was closed while emergency crews treated the occupants and investigators documented the crash. The roadway connects agricultural and industrial areas south of Salinas with U.S. 101. Officials did not provide a precise reopening time or report a secondary collision during the response.

Cause of Monterey County Head-On Crash Remains Under Investigation
The Honda’s movement into the opposing lane established the basic sequence described by CHP, but investigators had not announced why the vehicle crossed the center line. The agency had not said whether speed, alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision. It also had not released a final collision report or identified any mechanical or roadway condition as a factor.
The fact that the three people who died were passengers left surviving drivers in both vehicles and other passengers among the injured. CHP reported that the drivers were 21 and 20 years old, but the agency did not say which age corresponded to which vehicle in the public account. No information was released about seat-belt use or where each passenger had been seated.
CHP continued investigating the northbound Honda’s departure from its lane and the circumstances leading to the impact. As of Monday, authorities had not announced a final cause or described any enforcement action against either surviving driver.
