Sedan Struck Corner of Santa Fe Springs Restaurant
A silver sedan came to rest against a corner of the restaurant. Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics responded with Whittier police after the vehicle left the roadway and struck the building. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was taken to a hospital in an undisclosed condition. A third person had minor injuries and was not transported, the Fire Department said.
Whittier police later confirmed that the person who died was a pedestrian. The driver survived with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Surveillance footage showed people in the area rushing outside after the impact, and a woman injured in the incident could be heard calling for help. A nearby worker said she and a coworker crossed the street to assist the injured people.
The nearby worker said the injured woman hurt her foot. Another person who was inside the restaurant said the car caught fire and produced smoke after the crash, and that flying glass nearly struck her. Officials did not report that anyone inside the building required hospital treatment, and they did not release information about the extent of the restaurant’s structural damage.
The Fire Department’s initial count listed one death and two injuries. Later accounts identified the driver as one of the injured people but did not publicly clarify whether the woman with the foot injury was the person taken to a hospital or the person treated without transport. No later medical update was available Tuesday morning.

Investigators Had Not Announced a Cause
Police did not say what caused the driver to leave the roadway or whether the sedan first struck the pedestrian before reaching the restaurant. The available agency accounts did not identify a second vehicle, report an arrest or attribute the crash to speed, impairment, a medical emergency or a mechanical problem. The sedan was the only vehicle described as being involved.
The collision occurred at a busy intersection with commercial buildings close to the roadway. Emergency activity affected the immediate area while crews treated the injured people and officers began their investigation. Officials did not announce how long the intersection was restricted or when the damaged portion of the restaurant could reopen.
Whittier police continued investigating the sedan’s path and the events immediately before it struck the pedestrian and building. As of Tuesday morning, the department had not released a final collision report or announced a cause.
