One Killed in Santa Clarita Four-Vehicle Crash (Update: Christina Burbano Jeffrey)

SANTA CLARITA, CA – A woman died and several other people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash at Soledad Canyon Road and Rainbow Glen Drive in Santa Clarita. The Canyon Country collision was reported at about 12:16 p.m.

Los Angeles County firefighters and deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to the intersection. Fire spokesman Keith Navarre and sheriff’s Detective Charlie Upchurch both said the call came at approximately 12:16 p.m. Upchurch was at the scene during the early response. One person was trapped after the vehicles collided, and rescuers transported multiple patients to hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The woman who died was alone in her vehicle, sheriff’s Lt. John Griffith said. Officials had not released her name while the medical examiner’s office worked to notify her family. Early accounts described at least three vehicles, and sheriff’s officials later confirmed that four were involved.

Griffith said preliminary information indicated that a white Honda CR-V had been traveling on Soledad Canyon Road before moving east onto Rainbow Glen Drive. Officials did not describe the paths of the other vehicles or identify which impact caused the fatal injuries.

The first public account did not name the drivers or list the number of people in each vehicle. It also did not say whether the trapped person was the woman who died or one of the surviving patients.

Fire spokesman Keith Navarre said multiple people were taken to hospitals following the crash. Authorities did not release their ages or describe their injuries. No agency had announced an arrest or said that alcohol, drugs or excessive speed played a role.

Soledad Canyon Road and Rainbow Glen Drive Closed for Hours

Deputies placed yellow tape around the crash scene by about 1 p.m. and closed Soledad Canyon Road in both directions between Rainbow Glen Drive and Langside Avenue. City officials told drivers to avoid the area while emergency crews worked and deputies examined the collision.

The closure was expected to last three to four hours. It gave responders room to remove the trapped person, treat the injured and clear the damaged vehicles from the intersection.

Traffic investigators continued working to establish the sequence of the four-vehicle collision. Their early statements described the Honda’s direction of travel, but they did not assign fault or explain how the vehicles came together.

The investigation remained open after the injured patients left the scene. Officials had not provided an updated medical report or released the woman’s identity by Tuesday evening.
