Vehicles Left Dublin Boulevard After Impact
Officers responded at about 8:54 a.m. Oct. 20 to Dublin Boulevard between Silvergate and Inspiration drives. The fatal crash account identified the vehicles as a white Rivian sport utility vehicle and a silver Hyundai Sonata. Police described the collision as head on but had not released the vehicles’ directions of travel or their positions before impact.
The force of the collision sent both vehicles off Dublin Boulevard and down to the right shoulder of westbound I-580. Police said neither vehicle struck traffic already traveling on the freeway. The initial reports did not identify any other vehicle as part of the crash.
Emergency crews transported two occupants to a hospital. One later died, while the other person’s condition remained unknown Tuesday evening. Police did not say whether those two people were the drivers, passengers or one occupant from each vehicle.

Road and Freeway Lanes Closed
The first closure notice said Dublin Boulevard was closed in both directions between Inspiration and Silvergate drives while officers investigated. Drivers were directed away from the area because police did not initially know when the roadway would reopen.
A later road reopening update said the closure began around 9 a.m. and ended at about 12:20 p.m. The roughly three-hour interruption covered the section of Dublin Boulevard above the freeway shoulder where the vehicles landed.
The California Highway Patrol also closed two westbound I-580 lanes for several hours. Those lane closures allowed responders to work around the damaged vehicles without involving additional freeway traffic. Police had not released information about whether either occupant required rescue from a vehicle.
Cause Remained Unresolved
Dublin police had not explained what caused the vehicles to meet head on. The first public accounts did not report an arrest or citation and did not identify speed, impairment, roadway conditions or a mechanical problem as a contributing factor.
Investigators also had not identified the registered owners of the Rivian and Hyundai or stated whether the vehicles carried anyone beyond the two hospitalized occupants. Those details are necessary to determine which occupant was in each vehicle and whose conduct, if any, contributed to the crash.
The latest confirmed development was the death of one hospitalized person after the collision. Police continued to investigate the crash sequence, and no official finding of fault had been announced.
