Motorcyclist Dies in Oxnard Shopping Center Crash

OXNARD, CA – A 22-year-old motorcyclist died Thursday night from injuries suffered when a pickup truck leaving the Esplanade Shopping Center crossed his path on West Esplanade Drive in Oxnard, police said. 

The collision was reported at about 4:21 p.m. in the 200 block of West Esplanade Drive. Oxnard police officers and emergency medical crews found the rider and his 2004 Kawasaki Eliminator 125 trapped beneath the front of a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado. 

The Santa Paula man suffered major injuries and was taken to Ventura County Medical Center in critical condition. At about 10:26 p.m., the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office notified police that he had died. Authorities had not released his name by Friday morning.

Preliminary account placed pickup in motorcycle’s lane 

Traffic investigators said the pickup driver, 61-year-old Oxnard resident Juan Rodriguez, was making a left turn from the shopping center onto Esplanade Drive. The truck crossed the westbound lane as the motorcyclist traveled west, and the two vehicles collided head-on. 

The impact pinned the motorcycle and rider beneath the pickup. Police said the Silverado continued east for a short distance before Rodriguez stopped and called for help. He remained at the scene and cooperated with officers while emergency crews treated the rider. 

Officers evaluated Rodriguez for signs of impairment and did not believe he was impaired. Investigators had not determined whether the motorcyclist was impaired or whether speed contributed to the collision. Police did not announce an arrest or citation in either the initial release Thursday night or the fatal update issued Friday morning. 

The department’s preliminary description established the vehicles’ directions and the pickup’s movement out of the shopping center. It did not assign fault or explain how far the motorcycle was from the driveway when the truck entered the westbound lane. Those questions remained part of the traffic investigation. 

Investigation continued after fatal update 

The Police Department first announced the crash at 8 p.m. Thursday while the rider remained hospitalized. After receiving word of his death later that night, the agency issued an updated release at 7:30 a.m. Friday and said traffic investigators would continue working on the case.

The motorcyclist’s death was the only fatality reported in the collision. Police did not report that Rodriguez was injured, and the department had not released any additional information about the rider by Friday morning.
