CARLSBAD, CA – A 45-year-old Carlsbad woman died after a driver struck her Tuesday evening near Carlsbad Boulevard and Redwood Avenue, authorities said. Police found the involved vehicle more than a mile from the collision and arrested its driver during the fatal crash investigation.

Officers responded at 7:46 p.m. Sept. 15 to the 3800 block of Carlsbad Boulevard. They found a pedestrian in the roadway with major injuries and learned that the vehicle involved had left the area before they arrived.

The woman was identified as Vanessa Wheyland. She was crossing at Carlsbad Boulevard and Redwood Avenue when she was struck, according to the medical examiner identification. Paramedics took her to Sharp Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, where she was pronounced dead at 8 p.m.

Vanessa Wheyland Crash Driver Found by Police

Investigators used physical evidence recovered at the collision site, information from community members and Carlsbad’s automated license plate reader system to identify and locate the involved vehicle. Police said it was found just over one mile from where Wheyland was struck.

Air crews from the San Diego Police Department and San Diego County Sheriff’s Office assisted Carlsbad officers during the search. The public account did not state how long officers searched or specify which piece of evidence led them to the vehicle.

After additional investigation, police identified the driver as Fernando Saldana, 26, of Escondido. Officers arrested him and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility. The listed allegations included murder, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury or death, DUI causing injury or death, and gross vehicular manslaughter.

Those allegations had not been proven in court, and the arrest did not resolve the cause of the collision. Police said Saldana had a prior DUI conviction, while alcohol was suspected as a contributing factor in Tuesday’s crash.

The Police Department had not released a detailed account of the vehicle’s direction, speed or movements immediately before Wheyland was struck. Its statement also did not identify a traffic signal, crosswalk control or roadway condition as contributing to the impact.

The official release established that the driver left the collision area and was later found, but it did not say whether he made any statement to investigators. Authorities also had not announced completed toxicology results or a final determination regarding impairment.

Police continued seeking witnesses as the traffic investigation remained open. The department asked anyone with information to contact Traffic Accident Investigator Nicholas Alvarado at 442-339-5136 or Nicholas.Alvarado@carlsbadca.gov.

By Thursday, authorities had identified Wheyland and described the evidence used to locate the vehicle. The department’s latest public statement said the collision’s cause remained under investigation after Saldana was taken into custody.
