Dominique Rivers Tragically Killed in South LA Crash

LOS ANGELES, CA — A two-vehicle collision in South Los Angeles killed a 47-year-old Gardena man Friday afternoon, the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office confirmed this week. 

Dominique Rivers died at the scene of the crash, which happened around 2 p.m. near the intersection of South Orchard Avenue and West Rosecrans Avenue, according to the medical examiner’s office. The Los Angeles Police Department said the crash involved two vehicles. The other driver stopped at the scene as required and was not cited or arrested. 

Rivers’ identity was released Monday, several days after the crash, while investigators worked to notify relatives. 

The LAPD has not released details on what caused the crash. Traffic detectives examined the intersection afterward but have not disclosed their findings.

Investigating Dominique Rivers’ Accident

Traffic collisions killed 290 people in Los Angeles during 2025, according to LAPD data reported by LAist. That figure marked a 6% decline from the year before, though fatal collisions in the city still outpaced the citywide homicide count. More than 150 of those crashes involved pedestrians. 

The city adopted its Vision Zero initiative in 2015, aiming to eliminate traffic deaths by 2025. Los Angeles has since invested close to $350 million in the program. An April 2025 audit found that a lack of coordination among city departments had slowed its progress, and the city missed its target. 

South Los Angeles carries a disproportionate share of the city’s traffic injuries and deaths. Residents there rely more heavily on walking and public transit than residents of many other neighborhoods, which increases their exposure to wide arterial streets built primarily for vehicle traffic. Just 6% of Los Angeles street miles fall on the city’s High Injury Network, according to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. That network accounts for roughly 70% of all deaths and severe injuries involving people walking. 

Under California law, drivers owe other motorists a duty of reasonable care behind the wheel. When a driver’s negligence causes another person’s death, state law allows certain family members and the decedent’s estate to pursue compensation from the parties responsible. 

California follows a pure comparative negligence system, meaning a court can divide fault among multiple drivers. A driver found partially responsible can still be held liable for their share of the harm. 

LAPD has not said what caused the crash or whether either driver violated the Vehicle Code. Investigators also have not released findings on right-of-way or signal compliance at the intersection. 

Family members and injured parties in California generally have two years from the date of a collision to file a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit. That deadline runs regardless of when an investigation concludes.
