Sedan Crossed Double Yellow Lines
The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on Mather Boulevard south of Douglas Road in Sacramento County. CHP said a gray Hyundai Elantra was traveling south when it crossed the double yellow center lines and entered the northbound lane, where it struck a Chevrolet Equinox. The agency described that account as preliminary while investigators continued examining why the Hyundai moved into opposing traffic.
Investigators said the Hyundai may have been attempting to pass a slower vehicle before the collision, but CHP had not confirmed that maneuver as the cause. The available account did not say how fast either vehicle was traveling, identify the driver of either vehicle or state whether alcohol, drugs or distraction were suspected.
Emergency crews transported three people with major injuries. Two patients were initially listed in critical condition, including the child. CHP later confirmed that the child died at the hospital. Officials did not provide updated conditions for the two surviving patients or specify which vehicle each survivor occupied.

Investigation Continued After Road Reopened
The collision forced authorities to close Mather Boulevard in both directions between Douglas and Alert roads while emergency crews treated the injured and officers worked at the scene. The road reopened shortly after 10 a.m., roughly two hours after the first report.
The child attended Mather Heights Elementary School. Authorities did not publicly identify the child, and the available report did not provide the ages of the two injured adults. The crash occurred during the morning travel period near the school and residential areas south of Douglas Road.
The first public account described all three patients as seriously injured. Later that morning, CHP changed the case from a major-injury collision to a fatal investigation after receiving confirmation from the hospital. The two adults remained hospitalized as the agency continued its work at the crash location.
CHP had not announced an arrest or citation by Wednesday afternoon. Its preliminary account established the direction of travel for both vehicles and placed the Hyundai across the double yellow lines before impact, but the agency continued investigating the circumstances that led to the lane crossing. No additional medical update for the surviving patients was released in the initial reporting.
