An early morning multi-vehicle crash on the 210 Freeway in Sylmar left one person in critical condition Friday after two big rigs collided with an SUV and at least one other vehicle, sending one semi-truck’s cab dangling over the freeway’s embankment and triggering a Hazmat response that shut down all eastbound lanes for hours.
The incident began around 1:45 a.m. when an SUV stopped in traffic and was struck just east of Roxford Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. The chain-reaction crash involved two big rigs, the SUV and at least one other vehicle.

CHP officers were called to the eastbound freeway at the Roxford Street exit at 1:48 a.m., where they initially received a report of a vehicle blocking the middle lanes. When first responders arrived, they found a multi-vehicle crash, a victim trapped inside one of the big rigs and a big rig hanging over the freeway’s embankment.
The cab of one of the big rigs was left hanging over the side of the freeway and the driver had to be extricated. That driver was eventually freed and taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Two other drivers were transported to the hospital in fair condition, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Approximately 54 fire personnel were called to the scene. LAFD spokesman Jamie Stewart confirmed the three transports. No fatalities were reported.

A SigAlert was issued for the closure of all eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway, with motorists diverted off at Roxford Street. Cleanup was expected to take several hours as the two big rigs needed to be removed from the scene. Hazmat crews were also required to clear a fuel leak that had spilled onto the freeway. A Caltrans crew joined the Hazmat unit to clean up diesel fuel and debris from the middle lanes. The SigAlert was expected to remain in place until around 8 a.m.
There was no immediate word on why the SUV was stopped on the freeway. CHP said the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
