Culver City Police Pursuit Ends in Crash, Leaves Pedestrians Injured

CULVER CITY, CA – A carjacking suspect led Culver City police on an hour-long chase Tuesday evening that wound through city streets into downtown Los Angeles, leaving as many as six pedestrians and a police officer injured along the way, authorities said.

Culver City Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza said officers first received a report of a felony hit-and-run at approximately 6:57 p.m. The vehicle involved was believed to have been used in an earlier carjacking in Los Angeles, and one of the carjacking victims had provided the license plate number to police. Officers entered the plate into the department’s automated license plate reader system and, almost simultaneously, began fielding calls about a vehicle matching that description striking pedestrians at multiple locations, Atenza said.

“Our officers put the plate into our camera system, and then simultaneously, they were getting calls from multiple vehicle versus pedestrian incidents involving the same vehicle. Our officers tracked down the vehicle,” Atenza said.

When Culver City officers located the car, the driver fled. What followed was a high-speed pursuit through Culver City, with the suspect running red lights, driving into oncoming traffic, and continuing to strike pedestrians along the route, according to Atenza. The Los Angeles Police Department joined the pursuit as the suspect crossed into the city of Los Angeles.

The chase ended near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Olive Street, where the suspect accelerated into a McDonald’s drive-thru and collided head-on with a vehicle waiting in line. The suspect then attempted to flee on foot before officers tackled and detained him. He sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to a hospital for treatment before being booked into custody.

A Culver City police officer was also injured in the final crash and taken to the hospital. Atenza said the officer’s injuries are not life-threatening.

ABC7 reported six pedestrians were struck in total — two before the pursuit began and four more as the suspect fled police. MyNewsLA reported at least four pedestrians struck across multiple incident locations. Neither the suspect nor any victim had been identified by name as of Wednesday afternoon. Atenza said investigators were still working to determine the full extent of locations and vehicles involved.

“We’re working to get updates for all of them, but we’re finding out more and more incident locations of vehicles that were struck,” Atenza said.

The suspect was booked on suspicion of carjacking and attempted murder, according to Atenza. Fox 11 reported additional charges of felony evading and felony hit-and-run are also expected. His name had not been released as of this writing.
