GivingTuesday 2025: How You Can Make a Difference in Your Community

As the holiday season ramps up, GivingTuesday (December 2nd) offers a powerful moment to give back. This year we’re proud to spotlight Fix’n Fidos, a Southern California nonprofit dedicated to spaying/neutering pets and helping animals stay in loving homes. Whether you’re looking for ways to volunteer, get your family involved, or support local causes, here’s how you can turn generosity into action this GivingTuesday. 

How Did GivingTuesday Start?

GivingTuesday began in 2012. The idea was to create a national day dedicated to generosity and charitable action. It was launched by the 92nd Street Y in New York City in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and aimed to counterbalance the consumer-driven Black Friday.  

Since then, it has grown into a global movement celebrated in more than 70 countries, encouraging acts of giving in any way, shape, or form. 

What Does Fix’n Fidos Do?

Fix’n Fidos is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2019 by KTLA’s Kacey Montoya. Their mission is to reduce pet overpopulation in Southern California. They provide financial assistance for low-income pet owners to spay or neuter their dogs, cover unexpected vet bills, and partner with rescue organizations to keep pets out of shelters. The organization also organizes outreach events, fosters adoption programs, and supports communities where pets are at greatest risk. Their impact goes beyond animals and strengthens families and our neighborhoods. 

“I had an incredible time at this year’s golf event supporting Fix’n Fidos,” says Alex Boris, Senior Trial Attorney at J&Y Law. “I got to connect with people who are truly dedicated to protecting and caring for our pets. Hearing the stories and seeing the impact they’re making to reduce the stray animal population was inspiring.” 

Why Volunteer Time Instead of Just Donating Money?

Many people think giving means writing a check. But giving time and effort can be even more meaningful! GivingTuesday defines generosity as “time, talent, treasure or voice.” By volunteering with a trusted nonprofit, you can: 

• Meet and mentor youth or families in your area. 

• Use your professional skills (marketing, legal, tech) to help the nonprofit grow. 

• Be a role model to children or family members, showing real-world generosity in action. 

How Can Families Get Involved Together on GivingTuesday?

Families looking to give back together can make a day of it. Consider: 

• Volunteering at a local soup kitchen to help prep, serve meals, or hand out care packages.

• Hosting a neighborhood donation drive for food, clothing, pet supplies, or other essentials.

• Spreading kindness online by sharing a cause you care about with the hashtag #GivingTuesday and encouraging others to get involved.

Let’s use this day to build habits of kindness that will last a lifetime. 

How Can You Find Other Local Nonprofits to Support in California?

There are so many great non-profit efforts to choose from! Here are a few of the directories to explore: 

• Charity Navigator , where you can search by location or cause. 

• Local UnitedWay chapter websites often list vetted volunteer opportunities. 

• Use GivingTuesday’s “Generosity Toolbox” for ideas and local campaigns.  

When you review organizations, look for these signs of a strong nonprofit: a clear mission, transparent funding, measurable impact, volunteer opportunities, and good reviews. 

What Questions Should You Ask Before Volunteering or Donating?

Before you commit your time or money, ask: 

• Does the organization have a clear volunteer plan or orientation? 

• Are there roles for individuals or families rather than only large groups? 

• How will my donation or time be used? 

• Does the nonprofit provide feedback or show results from volunteers’ efforts? 

• If it’s a cause like pet rescue or spay/neuter work: what safeguards and standards are in place for animal welfare? 

These questions help you ensure your efforts have a real impact. 

Why Now Is a Great Time to Get Involved

GivingTuesday kicks off the heart of the holiday-giving season, and that timing matters. According to the Blackbaud Institute, a research lab for the non-profit sector, roughly 34 % of all charitable donations occur in the final three months of the year.  

Another study found that on average, 30% of annual giving is made in December, with 10% occurring in the last three days of the year alone.  

“There’s no such thing as a small act of kindness – just kindness,” reminds Boris. “Whether you give your time, your voice, or your resources, it all matters. Not everyone can give money, and that’s totally OK. What matters is showing up however you can. We all share this planet, and if each of us does a little, together we can do a lot.”
