[02-27-2026] Los Angeles County – Jose Navarette Identified as Victim in Fatal Compton Hit-and-Run Crash
Compton, California – A 56-year-old man who was fatally struck in a hit-and-run collision in Compton has been identified as Jose Navarette, according to county authorities.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Friday that Navarette was the pedestrian killed in the crash late Wednesday night.
Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Compton Station responded to reports of a collision at approximately 9:38 p.m. at the intersection of North Alameda Street and East Dixon Street. When authorities arrived, they found Navarette unconscious in the roadway.
Paramedics from the Compton Fire Department attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but Navarette was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital.
Investigators said the driver involved in the collision fled the scene without stopping to render aid. The suspect’s vehicle description has not been released, and authorities have not announced any arrests.
The intersection of North Alameda and East Dixon was temporarily closed while deputies conducted their investigation.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed whether speed, visibility, or other factors contributed to the collision.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Compton Station.

Can You Claim Compensation if a Loved One Dies in a Hit-and-Run?
Yes. If a loved one dies in a hit-and-run accident, surviving family members may be able to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. Even if the at-fault driver initially flees the scene, there may still be legal and insurance avenues available to recover financial damages.
Under California law, certain family members — including spouses, children, and in some cases dependent relatives — can file a wrongful death lawsuit. A qualified Los Angeles wrongful death attorney can evaluate your case and determine who is legally eligible to bring a claim.
What Compensation Can Be Recovered?
In a fatal hit-and-run case, compensation may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical bills related to the final injury
- Loss of the deceased’s financial support
- Loss of companionship and guidance
- Emotional suffering of surviving family members
If the driver is identified, a hit and run accident attorney can pursue a claim directly against the at-fault party. If the driver is not located, you may still be able to seek compensation through uninsured motorist coverage or other applicable insurance policies.
What If the Victim Was a Pedestrian?
Many fatal hit-and-run crashes involve pedestrians. In these cases, working with a skilled Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer is critical. Pedestrian cases often involve complex liability issues, surveillance evidence, and accident reconstruction.
Why Legal Representation Matters
Insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts — especially in high-value wrongful death cases. An experienced personal injury attorney in Los Angeles can conduct an independent investigation, preserve evidence, negotiate aggressively, and, if necessary, take the case to court.
Time limits apply to wrongful death claims in California, so it is important to act quickly to protect your rights.
