Distracted driving continues to pose a tangible threat to everyone on the road in California and beyond. The team at J&Y Law sees hundreds of distracted driving accident victims looking for the representation they need to get their lives back in order.
Concerns about distracted driving drove J&Y Law to start offering its Defense Against Distracted Driving Scholarship, valued at $1,000. This year, our personal injury lawyers proudly award the scholarship to Moriah Mosley.
Moriah Mosley is a rising freshman intent on studying Education at either Howard University or California Lutheran University. Her personal experience with distracted driving and recommendations for reducing distractions made her scholarship essay stand out from the rest.
Meeting Moriah Mosley
Moriah Mosley identifies herself as an aspiring educator. As an educator, she hopes to do more than impart lessons to her students. She also wants to craft an atmosphere that inspires empathy, creativity, and safety. This goal—and personal experience—influence Mosley’s perception of distracted driving.
The Accident that Changed Moriah Mosley’s Life
Moriah recalls the accident that changed her life well. She was in the car with her father and brother when a distracted driver swerved into her lane. The collision forced her car off the road and down a slope, where it rolled five times.
Miraculously, Moriah, her father, and her brother walked away from the crash physically safe. There’s a stark difference between a lack of injuries and a lack of impact, though. In Moriah’s own words, “Our car was totaled, [but] our minds imprinted with the sheer recklessness of one person’s distracted driving.”
How has that impact manifested in Moriah’s everyday life? She makes a point to switch off Wi-Fi and mobile data before getting behind the wheel. She even leaves the radio off. Her first-hand experience with the dangers of distracted driving HAS driven her to become a more attentive driver, thereby protecting the people on the road alongside her.

Propositions that Challenge Today’s Distracted Driving Habits
However, Moriah’s own efforts to reduce her distraction behind the wheel haven’t cured the people around her of distracted driving. She reports seeing friends fall victim to the “tempting sirens of their phones” while driving. While she can have conversations about her accident and curb that behavior, she believes community-level changes will have a greater impact on safety.
The team with J&Y Law was impressed by Moriah’s proposed approaches to the fight against distracted driving, which included recommendations about policy intervention, heavier violator fines, and “technology that detects driver distraction.”
What to Expect from Moriah Mosley in the Future
Moriah’s personal experience with the dangers of distracted driving has changed her relationship with the road, but it hasn’t changed her long-term goals. She intends to use her future as an educator to encourage roadway safety as well as her students’ personal growth.
Her propositions for a more focused roadway hinge on the intersection of community, institutional influence, and personal responsibility. Hopefully, with minds like hers helping the next generation, she can see her suggestions put into action.
For now, Moriah intends to continue her studies as an Education major at either Howard University or California Lutheran University. The team with J&Y Law has no doubt that she’ll go far.
In Her Own Words
