In 2020, the NHTSA reported over 5.2 million police-reported crashes in the United States, including 35,766 fatalities and almost 1.6 million injury crashes. That same year, Los Angeles County ranked second of similarly-sized counties in California for the highest number of fatal and injury accidents. Our Los Angeles car accident attorney looks at America’s most dangerous places to drive.

The Safest and Most Dangerous Cities to Drive in America

Fortunately, Los Angeles did not make it on the list of the top 10 least safe cities to drive in the United States. However, it also did not make it on the list of safest cities.

U.S. News & World Report commissioned a study that examined fatal auto accidents per capita in cities from 2016 through 2020. According to the study, the five least safest U.S. Cities for driving were:

  1. Memphis
  2. Albuquerque
  3. Detroit
  4. Louisville
  5. Tucson

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the five safest U.S. Cities for driving were:

  1. Boston
  2. New York City
  3. Honolulu
  4. Washington, D.C.
  5. Minneapolis

Los Angeles did make it on the list of the worst cities to drive. It ranked 31st out of 50 cities. The statistics might be interesting. However, individuals involved in car accidents in Los Angeles understand the devastation accidents can cause, regardless of whether a city is safe or unsafe for drivers.

Accident Injuries Caused by Los Angeles Automobile Accidents

Traffic accidents can cause catastrophic injuries. Common car accident injuries include:

  • Broken bones and fractures
  • Neck injuries and whiplash
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries, including concussions and severe TBI
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Back injuries
  • Internal organ injury
  • Paralysis
  • Nerve damage
  • Loss of limbs and amputations
  • Airbag and seatbelt injuries

It is always in a person’s best interest to seek medical care after a car accident. Some injuries might not present symptoms immediately after the accident. Prompt medical care can help prevent injuries from becoming more serious. It also increases the chance you receive a fair settlement for your personal injury claim.

Compensation for Damages Caused by a Los Angeles Car Accident

California is an at-fault state for car accident cases. The injured person must prove the other party caused the collision to hold that party responsible for their injuries and damages.

Once you prove fault and liability for a car accident, you can seek compensation for damages, including:

  • Medical bills
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages
  • Emotional distress
  • Out-of-pocket expenses
  • Decrease in quality of life
  • Mental anguish
  • Impairments and disfigurements
  • Reduction in earning capacity
  • Scarring and disfigurement

The amount you receive for economic damages and non-economic damages depends on the factors involved in your case. In a small number of cases, an injured victim could receive punitive damages from the at-fault party. A Los Angeles car accident lawyer can provide additional information about damages during a free case review.
