Uber Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Uber vehicles were involved in 107 fatal accidents in the U.S. between 2017 and 2019. Additionally, 2,935 non-fatal crashes involving Uber vehicles occurred during the same period, resulting in 3,221 injuries.

Lyft Accident Statistics

Lyft has not released up-to-date accident statistics; however, the rideshare company’s recent safety report states safety incidents occurred on a small percentage of rides, “and well over 99% of all rides occur without any safety report.” Additionally, Lyft announced in 2019 that the company had partnered with the National Safety Council to improve safety and pledged to share data on safety incidents.

Determining Liability in an Uber or Lyft Accident

Determining liability in a rideshare accident can be complicated; fault depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • The actions of the drivers involved
  • The condition of the vehicles
  • The circumstances surrounding the accident.

Liability may be divided between the driver, the rideshare company, and any third parties involved. If the rideshare driver is at fault for the accident, they may be held responsible for any damages or injuries. However, if the accident occurs while the driver is on the clock, the rideshare company may also be liable.

Understanding Insurance Coverage In a Rideshare Accident

Uber and Lyft provide insurance coverage for their drivers, but the amount of coverage depends on whether:

  • The rideshare driver was logged onto the app and connected to a passenger
  • The rideshare driver was traveling to pick up a passenger
  • The rideshare driver was transporting a passenger to their destination

If the app is off, the Uber or Lyft driver’s personal liability insurance will be the primary source of coverage. When the app is on, but the rideshare driver has not connected to a passenger, the driver must have additional liability coverage above the state minimum. Uber and Lyft provide an additional $200,000 in liability coverage during this period.

When an Uber or Lyft driver is retrieving or transporting a passenger, the rideshare companies provide up to $1 million in liability coverage. If a third party is involved in the accident, determining liability can be more challenging.

For example, if another driver causes an accident while the rideshare driver is on the clock, the other driver and the company may be liable. In this case, determining liability will depend on the specific circumstances of the accident. Given these complexities, working with an experienced California rideshare accident attorney is essential.
