Do I or my loved ones have a claim for damages due to a burn injury?

Usually, the threat of a burn injury over the July 4th holiday is related to fireworks mishaps. But that wasn’t the case this year in one part of California.

On July 3, 2016, a five-day spree of murder and attempted murder in the San Diego area had people–particularly homeless folks–on edge. Someone was randomly setting homeless men on fire, often while they were sleeping. Four victims were attacked over the course of 5 days. Two died from their injuries while the other two were seriously burned.

Police have arrested a man in the attacks who has a prior history of setting homeless men on fire. In 2010, when the suspect himself was homeless, he was convicted of mayhem and assault and sentenced to 4 years in prison for dousing another homeless man—his so-called friend–with a flammable liquid, setting him on fire and watching him burn until witnesses intervened. The man suffered extensive burn injuries.

When a victim sustains a burn injury (or other personal injury) as a result of the negligent or willful actions of another person, they may be entitled to compensation for their injuries. If the victim dies as a result of their injuries, his/her surviving relatives may be entitled to compensation for certain of their losses as well as compensation for the victim’s suffering, depending on the unique circumstances of each case.

Burn injury attorneys who concentrate their practice exclusively in the areas of personal injury law can sort through the evidence of a burn injury accident or incident and advise you as to your right to compensation since each case is unique.
