What are the most Common Winter Accidents in California

While the state of California may not experience the more severe hardships that come with winter, this season still brings with it hazards that every driver should be aware of, including a fair amount of rain and high winds that can become road hazards.

If you’ve ever driven in Southern California during the winter, you probably already know that the season can be dangerous due to these obstacles, but it’s always worth remembering some of the hazards you may encounter on the road:

Loss of control of the vehicle

Weather conditions such as rain and humidity tend to increase the chances of slippery roads, which in turn can lead to a vehicle losing traction and having some type of accident. Additionally, the possibility of a driver speeding or acting recklessly can increase the risks even more. If you are driving on slippery roads, avoid reckless actions such as making sharp turns at high speed or changing lanes too quickly.

Visibility problems

During the rainy season, the water often hits with such force that it causes a dense fog that can limit a driver’s visibility and increase the chances of an accident. Additionally, a lack of ventilation can cause a vehicle’s interior to fog up, introducing new risks to consider. If many drivers in the area are not used to turning on their defroster, it is necessary to remember that it exists and that it is valuable in avoiding possible accidents.

Skidding and sliding

Although you may think that skidding and sliding on roads only occur when they are covered with ice (or due to more adverse winter conditions), other factors can cause the wheels of your vehicle to skid on the road. Conveniently, most skids and slides can be avoided by paying attention, following the traffic rules, and driving calmly and safely.

While California residents are well aware that a wet or icy road can cause skids, most of the time, it is the drivers themselves who cause the skid. This is why it is important that you always make sure you drive safely and keep your vehicle in perfect condition.
