THAT AREA, MORE THAN 1500 CREWS ARE WORKING ON THE SITE’S FIRE RIGHT NOW. A HEADACHE FOR TRAVELERS AT SACRAMENTO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THE BAGGAGE BELT IN TERMINAL B BROKE DOWN THIS MORNING. THAT’S THE BELT THAT TAKES THE LUGGAGE FROM THE CHECK IN COUNTER TO THE TARMAC, WHICH THAT’S WHEN IT’S LOADED ONTO YOUR PLANE. SO THIS VIDEO SHOWS LUGGAGE PILING UP AT THE SOUTHWEST CHECK IN COUNTER. YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH HAS NOT BEEN PUT ON THE PLANES YET, BUT THAT’S NOT THE ONLY FRUSTRATION TRAVELERS ARE DEALING WITH RIGHT NOW. THE AIRPORT HAS A WARNING FOR ANYONE FLYING IN AND OUT OF SMF ANYTIME SOON. KCRA 3’S MARICELA DE LA CRUZ JOINS US THERE NOW. SO MARICEL, YEAH, A BIG HEADACHE FOR TRAVELERS. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE RIGHT NOW? YEAH. ANDREA. WELL, IT’S NOW BEEN PRETTY MUCH CLEARED OUT. THIS IS THE AREA WHICH YOU GUYS WERE MENTIONING. IT’S NOW BEEN CLEARED OUT. EARLIER THIS MORNING IT WAS COMPLETELY PACKED WITH DOZENS AND DOZENS OF SUITCASES. ALL THOSE BAGS THAT SOUTHWEST EMPLOYEES WERE COMING OUT HERE MANUALLY TRANSPORTING THOSE ONTO THE TARMAC. AND LOADING THOSE ONTO THE PLANE. BUT THAT CONVEYOR BELT BACK THERE IS NOW UP AND RUNNING. SO AGAIN, THIS AREA PRETTY MUCH CLEARED OUT IN A LOT OF HAPPIER TRAVELERS. BUT ASIDE FROM THE ISSUES THAT AIRLINES MAY BE ENCOUNTERING ON ANY GIVEN DAY, THERE’S FRUSTRATIONS THERE. THE TRAVELERS ARE DEALING WITH, BEGINNING WITH CONSTRUCTION ON INTERSTATE FIVE, WHICH IS DELAYING TRAFFIC. WE EXPERIENCED IT OURSELVES ON OUR WAY TO THE AIRPORT. THIS MORNING, MAKING THAT TRIP JUST A LITTLE BIT LONGER. BUT THAT DOESN’T END THERE FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE ALSO DRIVING THEIR OWN VEHICLES, EXPECTING TO FIND ONE OF THOSE PARKING SPACES OUT HERE. THE AIRPORT RIGHT NOW HAS ABOUT 30,000 SPACES WHICH ARE FILLING UP PRETTY QUICKLY. AND THIS IS BECAUSE, ACCORDING TO A SPOKESPERSON WITH THE SACRAMENTO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, THEY HAVE BEEN SEEING RECORD BREAKING TRAVEL NUMBERS EVERY MONTH FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW. THE SPOKESPERSON ADDS THAT, UM, THE DAYS WHEN YOU COULD COME. 45 MINUTES BEFORE OR AN HOUR BEFORE YOUR FLIGHT ARE LONG GONE, YOU DO NEED TO COME A FEW HOURS IN ADVANCE TO KEEP IN MIND THAT COMMUTE AND THE PARKING AND ANY OTHER ISSUES THAT MAY ARISE, LIKE THE ONES THAT MANY TRAVELERS EXPERIENCED OUT HERE TODAY. JUNE WILL BE THE BIGGEST, BUSIEST MONTH THAT WE’VE EVER HAD, AND WE EXPECT TO SEE ABOUT 1.2 MILLION PEOPLE COME THROUGH THE AIRPORT. WE’RE STARTING TO SEE, EVEN ON A DAILY OCCURRENCE, UP TO 24,000 PEOPLE COMING THROUGH THE AIRPORT. SO WE TRY TO GET HERE AT LEAST A COUPLE HOURS EARLY. UM, WE DID GET AN ALERT FROM SOUTHWEST TO COME HERE LIKE THREE HOURS EARLY BECAUSE OF SOME ISSUE WITH THE CAROUSELS. SO WE DID, UM, FOUND THAT PARKING WAS FULL. SO WE DID HAVE TIME, THOUGH, TO DROP OFF MY WIFE AND KIDS TO CHECK IN. AND THEN I PARKED AT THE ECONOMY LODGE. AND THE AIRPORT IS EXPECTING TO HAVE EIGHT NEW SHUTTLES BY THE END OF THE MONTH OF JULY. THAT’S TO HELP EASE THE FLOW BETWEEN THE PARKING LOTS AND THE AIRPORT. WE ARE LIVE AT THE SACRAMENTO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. MARICELA DE LA CRUZ KCRA 3 NEWS. GREAT TO SEE THOSE ISSUES RESOLVED
