A high school student who authorities say falsely reported a gunman on campus on Thursday has been arrested, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

The student, only identified as a 17-year-old boy at Moorpark High School, used the department’s “WeTip” service to anonymously report that there was a person on campus with a firearm. After consulting with the School Resource Office on Thursday, Moorpark High School Administrators issued a “Shelter in Place” order so authorities could investigate the campus.

The investigation involved authorities from the Moorpark Investigations Bureau, Moorpark Patrol and Thousand Oaks Police – School Resource Officer Unit.

Authorities received two more WeTip reports during the investigations, with both providing more specific information pertaining to the location of the gun. Investigators searched classrooms that were noted in the report, but ultimately nothing of concern was found and the shelter order was lifted.

Further investigations linked the fake tips to a student at the school. He was later arrested on suspicion of falsely reporting an emergency and booked into the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard.
