Sacramento deputies detain armed man after standoff at Orangevale apartment complex

Sacramento deputies have detained an armed man after an hourslong standoff at an Orangevale apartment complex. The standoff was along Madison Avenue at Madison Green Lane, the sheriff’s office said. The man, identified as Steven Richard Kester, is currently being prosecuted on charges related to child sex acts. He barricaded himself in the first-floor unit behind the “Rollingwood Green” sign.Kester pointed a gun at himself and stabbed himself with a knife when deputies tried to approach him, the sheriff’s office said. He then went back inside the apartment unit while still stabbing himself.This standoff began several hours ago, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi with the sheriff’s office. Deputies heard a gunshot from inside the unit around 11:30 a.m., but it does not appear that the bullet was fired toward deputies. It is also unknown if Kester shot himself.Gandhi said no one else is inside the unit with Kester.Deputies went to perform a welfare check on Kester at the request of his lawyer after he did not appear at a court hearing. Gandhi said they have been trying to communicate with the man but have not heard from him. At 12:22 p.m., KCRA 3 reporter Orko Manna observed a SWAT team use a loudspeaker, ordering Kester to come out with his hands up.About 10 minutes later, Manna reported hearing deputies use less-than-lethal force to break windows and establish contact with Kester.At 1:14 p.m., the sheriff’s office said Kester was “detained alive.” The extent of Kester’s injuries is unknown, but Manna spotted medical personnel pull a stretcher out an ambulance.Kester is a retired teacher and former substitute teacher for the Folsom Cordova Unified School District and other schools in the Sacramento area, the sheriff’s office said.According to the sheriff’s office, Kester is currently being prosecuted on charges related to multiple counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14. He is accused of molesting a family member and at least one of his former students. The FBI raided his home in 2021.This is a developing story.
