OAKLAND — A person died early Friday when several cars were involved in a crash on a freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash on eastbound Interstate 580 happened about 12:20 a.m. at the Grand Avenue off-ramp. The CHP said many vehicles were involved but did not have a specific number immediately on Friday morning.

The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic after the wreck, because all eastbound lanes were blocked at the Grand Avenue exit. All the lanes were back open at 1:15 a.m.

Authorities did not identify the dead person immediately, pending notification of relatives.

More information on the wreck was expected to be released later Friday.
