A garbage truck that caught fire has prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a SIGALERT in Pleasant Hill.

The incident occurred at 9:14 am in the area of  I680 N / I680 N Sr242 N when a garbage truck caught fire and sent a column of smoke into the air which was picked up on the cameras as far away as Briones Rancho de la Rosa camera.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters arrived on scene to the truck fully engulfed in flames and determined they would let it burn itself out. They also requested County Hazmat.

By 9:30 am, a SIGALET was issued and were shutting down all of northbound I-680. Fire crews were in “defensive” fire attack.

Earlier this morning at approximately 9:14am a fully loaded Garbage Truck caught fire while traveling on I-680 northbound, just north of Monument Boulevard. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. CHP along with Contra Costa Fire responded to the scene to assist.

For safety reasons, CHP has all northbound lanes closed just north of Monument Boulevard, and the #1, #2, and #3 southbound lanes closed as well with an unknown estimated time of opening.

Avoid I-680 in the Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill area if possible.
